Memories - Ipswich Town v QPR Thursday, 27th Mar 2008 16:31 A look back at some of the history between Saturday's opponents Ipswich and QPR. Welcome to the first in a new feature that takes a look back at some past memories of the R’s against their forthcoming opponents and looks at the players to grace both clubs. This week Rangers travel to Portman Road to take on an Ipswich team right amongst the play-off hopefuls at the top of the Championship. Our first trip to Suffolk came in 1939 ending in a 1-0 defeat, while the most recent of visits also ended up in the Tractor boy’s favour with a 2-1 win over Rangers. There have been plenty of highs and lows in between as we take a walk down the blue and white hoped path of memory lane…. Memorable Match Most R’s would have been happy with a point but in the second half, Rangers took the lead through goal scoring midfielder Stuart Wardley (never rated him!) with a burst from the middle that was so typical of him at the time. Rangers refused to sit back on their lead and went further head five minutes later when Rob Steiner nipped in to make it 3-1. The Swede wasn’t finished there though and put Rangers in dreamland by making it four with eight minutes left to play. One of QPR’s best performances in a season that saw the R’s finish tenth while Ipswich despite losing went on to gain promotion through the play-offs. Ipswich: Richard Wright, Croft (Stockwell) Thetis, McGreal, Venus, Jermaine Wright, Holland, Magilton, Clapham, Johnson (Naylor) Scowcroft QPR: Harper, Breacker, Wardley, Maddix, Ready, Baraclough, Peacock (Gallen) Langley, Darlington, Steiner, Kiwomya (Rowland) Player Connections Georges Santos Alan Brazil Others: Phil Parkes (QPR 1970-1979, Ipswich 1990-91), Simon Walton (Ipswich 2006-07 on loan, QPR 2007- present) Fans’ Memories 2-0 in '83, Stainrod & Gregory. First time we ever wore the Dennis the Menace. The League Cup game in '85 was a scream as well! - Norfolt I remember a non-descript 1-1 in the early nineties on a Tuesday night (think Devon White scored for us), livened up only by abusing ref Roger Milford all night. Remember him? And we think Rob Styles is attention-seeking these days... Queens Parker Game about three years ago we won 2-0, the ball hit the back of Furs head and having so much space he turned around and ran toward the goal and just sent in a low shot! - Warfield Losing 2-0, driving back towards what's known as West Berkshire in an escort van full of drunk pillocks, stopping under the M25/M4 junction so said drunk pillocks could pile out and have a slash, when I noticed the CTV cameras filming said drunken pillocks slashing on the hard shoulder. Spending the next two weeks waiting for the summons, which thankfully never came. It's great being a football fan. Sometimes - Ted Hendrix Add your own Ipswich memories to the Message Board
