What martial arts do your kids do did you do as a child? 22:10 - Oct 10 with 6505 viewsOakR

Following on from a couple of posts in the UFC thread, I wondered what people had done themselves as children, or what their children do.

I wish I'd done something when I was young, and my son (not far off 8) has been doing JuJitsu for around a year now, which he loves. I might get him to do something else when he is a bit older, but wanted to see what others do, and why.

My daughter does MMA and has been for 18 months she trains in a specialist gym twice a week
she is trained by Claire Reilly & Danny Bratten , she has no fear at all and won’t ever back down
Oh And loves combat ( takes after her mum , ha ha ) she also plays rugby but wanted to do this as she wanted to test herself one on one , she is also hoping to join the RAF in the next 2 years

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Sounds good - seems like it's best not to mess with the ladies in your family!

My boy loves the grappling and kickboxing they have just started, though with kids 3 years older than him which is good for him, but as his age it's still fairly tame - I wonder if he'll still like it when older in the same way your daughter does which will be physically tiring, and will hurt lot I expect.

I did TKD, then kickboxing in my early 20s. Now I practise Sanshou which is what the Chinese military teach.

My eldest had done TKD for 3 years. Great for fitness and discipline. Plus he can look after himself.

My 5 year old wants to do BJJ but I don't think he is mature enough yet.

From age six I learned a Canadian martial art that involved very high speeds, curved sticks, slamming people into walls, and blades attached to the bottoms of your boots.

Then when I was eleven I moved back from Canada and practiced unarmed wrestling for an egg shaped ball for over 30 years.
I also did many years of Feng Shou Kung Fu.

My eldest son (21) does Wing Chun Kung Fu
My youngest (8) does Karate.
And my middle son (19) runs very very fast.

All combat sports are obviously good on many levels, can't think of much better for a person.

Some are better than others though. Muay Thai is King without doubt (my daughter trains in this) and good old Queensbury rules Boxing (my favourite) are by far the best if you want to be able to defend yourself effectively or hurt somebody who down-votes your posts.

Kung Fu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do are honestly a bit rubbish They wouldn't help you in a fight against anybody hard. Although still good for kids as it's all fitness and discipline. Just realise they are a bit like theatre or dancing really. All that poncing around learning dance moves to get a coloured belt lol. I did a bit of Karate as a youngster, but quickly realised it was a poor. A bit of Muay Thai and boxing in more recent years. Wish i'd started earlier. If you have a boy, send him to Muay Thai and he'll be able to assassinate people.

Then there are the floor styles; Judo, Jiu Jitsu etc. which don't interest me at all, but each to there own i suppose. Jiu Jitsu is legitimate, very good, but not my cup of tea rolling around on the floor. You try fighting on the floor in a street fight, his mate is gonna come up and kick you in the head. If he's learning Jiu Jitsu already, you should put him in an MMA school. That's what i'd be doing if i was twenty years younger. Still considering it, but at a young 44 it's probably not wise.

Let's not confuse sports combat and martial arts though. MT is great but it doesn't teach you what to do if the fight does go to the ground nor what to do if someone gets you in a head / neck lock. That's where Sanshou and Krav Maga are superior.

Even in TKD you learn self defence skills. Don't be too quick to dismiss other martial arts bud. Each has its place and that's not always in the ring or a stand up scenario.

This thread has come along at the right time. My daughter has just turned 4 and the wife really wants her to learn self defence early to help her deal with any unwanted attention later in life. The stats on the number of girls who suffer some sort of sexual attack are scary so I'm all for it.

Wife was thinking Karate, but the only one I know anything about is boxing and seems to me a pretty good sport for fitness, self-confidence and very usable in the event of being harrassed on the street/in a club. That said Jiu Jitsu also looks another good option.

Honestly, at that age its more to do with the club than what they teach. I think 4 is too young personally. My eldest was a very mature 5 year old when he started TKD (hes now 8). My 5 year old isnt mature enough to take everything in concentrate for an hour so I am holding him back until next year.

The reason I took him to TKD was that the club was run by a lovely lady (4th dan and world champion though!) and was called Little Ninjas. It catered just for under 12's, with most being under 8. A very friendly, relaxed environment. So my advice would be find a children only class with an instructor who has kids. You'll know within 30 mins if its a good club. Remember, at that age its all about fun....

That's a very sweeping statement about other martial arts. And quite frankly if someone wants to raise their foot above waist height to try kick me, they are going to get dumped on their head very hard.
The biggest benefit of any self defence system is that it gets you to think about potential outcomes and helps you understand what you are and aren't physically capable of.
I grew up in an area where most agg involved stanley knives or pint glasses. In such situations, and most others, the best defence is the brain power that enables you to anticipate and avoid the situation in the first place.

The good thing about karate for kids is the gamification of an initial relatively quick progression through belts which allows the kids to see tangible progress, gain confidence and learn respect. (In my kung fu you were doing well if you moved up a belt every two years).
When they are older they can then explore more effective systems such as Krav Maga or Keysi.

I think a mixture in Muay Thai with BJJ is almost perfect, you'd have to be a pretty handy guy to be able to live with someone equally adept at range, close up, in the clinch and on the floor.

I think Judo is really good for Children, as it's all about using the other persons momentum and weight. A lot of throws focus on putting your opponents chest or head on the floor very quickly.

I like BJJ for the fact you can train at 100% and get very little damage as long as you tap whilst Muay Thai, boxing, Kyo-Shin Karate can leave you icing different parts of yourself.

My opinion, which carries little worth on here, would be to stay away from Krav Maga or Aikido.

Good tips, cheers.

I thought she might be a little young, but same time she loves playing rough and tumble and she's in a gymnastics development squad where she does 5 hours a week so she's used to holding focus/following instructions. Reckon look in to a few clubs and like you say maybe focus more on the environment than the discipline.

Having tried quite a few martial arts out, if I had a kid this is what I'd get them doing.

From the earliest age possible I'd get them doing Taekwondo. It's a nonsense martial art but it'd give them great flexibility and balance.

I'd get them doing brazilian jiu jitsu from very early on also. If a fight goes to the ground, they'll win. Seriously, people who know BJJ can absolutely dominate you.

And then from 10 onwards, I'd get them doing boxing and/or Muay Thai.

I'd avoid kung fu like the plague.

One of the reasons we go to the JuJitsu club near us, is they make it so welcoming for kids. Before it starts they can turn up ealy and play football or run around, the last 5-10 mins of the hour session they play dodgeball and some other variant. My son loves the whole thing and the teachers (senseis!) are really good with the kids. I'd even say they could be a bit more discipline in this one (I'd have been doing a lot of pushups acting the same in TKD!), but it's good and they do focus on technique etc and learn in a friendly atmosphere. They have 3 possible results for each grading (1 stripe, 2 stripe, full belt) so everyone can get something at a grading - those that take it more seriously or go more tend to get 2 stripes or full, others get 1 or 2. I did TaeKowondo for a few years aged 18 and it was great for a workout and gaining confidence which I think the latter any martial art boxing etc will give you, which in turn probably makes it less likely you would get picked on.

I chose JuJitsu for my son as I thought a lot of playground bullying (at his age anyway) is holding etc and he could get out of locks, and put people on them without getting in trouble for hitting people. I'm slighty worried at this rate he will be a black belt at around 11 12 and sending him to his room at 15 might be difficult!

My Dad did boxing as a kid and it helped him and my cousin, so I think I might move him onto that when older, but some interesting other options here. They also teach the Japanese sword thing Laido at JuJitsu but I don't fancy him learning that at any age!

I was the head instructor of a tae kwon do studio for about 10 years. I have a fourth degree black belt and both of my children got their black belts there and both were junior instructors. Martial arts (doesn't matter which one) are a fantastic way to teach children discipline and (self) motivation and to build their confidence and self control. They are also wonderful leadership development training.

In general, I would say that your experience with a martial arts school will have much more to do with the character of the Grand Master and the culture of the school than the specific brand of martial arts, as such. Remember, martial arts studios are very much based around the character and interests of the Grand Master and no two are alike. My suggestion would be to talk with the Grand Master before committing to a studio and try and get a feel for his/her character and whether that is what you are looking for. Ask the Grand Master about their interests (in terms of martial arts -- who cares about their hobbies, right?). Are they interested in competition and the sports side or are they interesting in the spiritual development and discipline side? Think about what your interests are and then find a Grand Master who matches those interests.

When it comes to martial arts, you have "hard" disciplines (like tae kwon do and krav maga), which are all about strikes and kicks, you have "soft" ones (like tae chi) which are about movement and precision, and you have grappling disciplines (like jujitsu and judo).

Having said that, my studio was much more about the journey than the destination -- that is, we were training students in self discipline and personal growth and not particularly interested in tournament trophies. You would not have known that if you hadn't spoken to the Grand Master. My closest friend in the tae kwo do world runs two studios that spend most of their time training students for tournaments. His studios are brilliant, but that is not what interests me personally (although tournaments are very fun occasionally). Our students generally didn't do very well at tournaments, but lots of our students have gone on to do amazing things in the community.

In my experience, children shouldn't learn martial arts until they are between 6-7. Everyone wants to start their kids early but my experience is that kids do not understand how to use their body sufficiently until they are around 7 years old. I know that there are always exceptions and everyone thinks that their kid is exceptional, but a decade of standing in front of students and teaching moves taught me that you aren't doing anyone any favours by putting them in a class before they are ready.
