A number of institutions - including the government - have written extensively on the implications of No-Deal and the substantial majority feeling is that No-Deal Brexit wouldn't be the end of the world but very, very, very bad.

People disagree about the extent and duration of damage and disruption from a No-Deal Brexit, but there is near universal agreement it will be considerable. Over the last 40 years, the UK and EU have heavily interlinked the way they operate and the way businesses, bureaucracies and institutions work. Leaving without a deal - without replacement - stops many of the legal agreements and structures which enable that.

Tariffs would be obligated. For many goods, this will make no difference but for others, e.g. lamb, EU tariff peaks would lock UK producers out of what is currently their only market.

The paperwork currently required to conduct trade between the UK and EU is minimal. So much so that business which trade exclusively with the EU do not have to register as exporters. This will abruptly stop in a No-Deal. The basic export document runs to 32 pages with 100+ pages of guidance. And that is for single exports. If an item is comprised of components from several supply chains, each element will need to be documented and recorded, for every transaction. The administration of this will be both expensive and time-consuming for UK business

It is accepted by almost everyone that the administration will create supply chain and port disruption. The effects of this are extremely difficult to model with accuracy, hence the massive stockpiling by many businesses. E.g. The manufacture of industrial waste water purification filters in the UK was reviewed. It would only take minor damage to some key sewage plants in the UK to back up the domestic water supply.

The EU's obligations to provide the UK access to its services market under WTO rules are considerably more modest than those in goods. In a variety of sectors, UK firms and UK individuals will lose the right to sell services (like insurance) into the EU, to operate EU branches or to travel to the EU to undertake work in person.

Yeah, no deal is sunlit uplands.

"A number of institutions - including the government - have written extensively on the implications of No-Deal and the substantial majority feeling is that No-Deal Brexit wouldn't be the end of the world but very, very, very bad. "

You know this is what worries me about a second referendum. If the result is leave again how can most MP's after what they have said vote to leave.

No. That obviously isn't what he is saying. He is saying pretty close ton100% of people who did vote green are remain.

Exactly. And I’d say there’s more chance that people who voted Labour and Tory aren’t all in support of Brexit.

You can't protect without control

I don't hear the UK talking about controlling a border, physically or otherwise, it's only the EU making an issue over it with the backstop.

Let them build and control it if they want, I'm sure it will go down well.

If the UK chooses to trade under WTO rules, it comes with a pledge to enforce the rules at the borders.
The EU will want to prevent the UK shipping shoddy goods to the EU via the Irish border, but the UK will need to collect tariffs even-handedly.

So both sides have to do something or ensure consistency between UK and EU27, hence the backstop.

And any hard border in Ireland would breach the Good Friday Agreement, an internationally registered treaty.

Exactly the same thing was said on TV the other day - it was correctly dismissed because those figures should read No Deal WTO Brexit 34% Anti Brexit 41%. They then worked out the split in the Labour and Tory votes and guess what? Came up with a figure of 48% Remain 52% Leave - exactly the same as the Referendum!

You could try to allocate Labour and Tory votes to either side of the Brexit count. I've not seen any such report but if 60% of Lab voters were Remain and 75% of Tories for Leave (an educated guess), then anti Brexit would almost certainly be in front as Labour out polled the Tories by some margin.

I was being deliberately provocative with the figures I quoted, but we can all agree the UK is hopelessly split.

Why would the UK ship shoddy goods to the EU via the Irish border. This seems to be the underlying message from those wishing to remain, once out of the protection of the EU we will become a banana republic. What next children up chimneys.

As derbyhoop says, the EU is protecting the integrity of its border. If the UK choice is to leave, the onus is on the UK to come up with a solution, not the EU.

Interesting to see the CBI coming out so strongly against no deal today. It suggests that they've been lobbied by small businesses in substantial numbers.

The CBI have been against leaving the EU since the referendum. Plenty of scare stories from them in the past.

The CBI represents companies, it's not a political party. It is communicating what it is hearing from businesses.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Anybody fancy chlorinated chicken and hormone injected beef going into ready meals made in the UK and exported to the EU, including the Irish Republic.

The US will demand UK acceptance of those products as part of any UK/US trade deal.
And US insurers will demand access to the NHS where Farage will be encouraging them.

And for some Tories, sending children up chimneys is a wet dream.

Under Henry the II and some of his successor's we built up (maybe due to the viking William as well) a huge legal system of state unmatched by any medieval power.

Which lead ^^ to a reorganization of England's military power under Edward I. etc etc

Industrial revolution etc etc

My point being is we were sometimes the first to try something different.

Both the CBI and its mouth piece the BBC which are funded by the EU project would have the small minded in society towing the line with every headline.
Unlike the non funded London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who take a different aproach.
