Excellent piece as usual.

One more tiny positive has been increased use of the 'youngsters' and the development of one or two at least?

Oh, all ye pessimists with your predictions!

I took the advise of my wife & have gone for the "unexpected " away win. I need to edit it though to a 3-1 win as it was when we last played there in the last match of the season.

Thanks Clive, a fitting finale & I can't wait to read the match report!

As usual, a superb preview. Clive, many thanks for all your hard work throughout the season. It's absolutely essential for ex-pats like me and many others who can no longer get to the games. Absolutely brilliant - thanks again!

Well, we won't put a bullet in you, Clive - despite your recent Forest programme article.

One other positive: as QPR fans we are very lucky to have this website and forum. Clive is an excellent writer and we have some brilliant regulars - some insightful, many frequently hilarious.

I suspect next season may actually be a bit better than our worst fears, but if it all goes to hell in a handcart we'll still have the gallows humour of this site and the support of the posters to see us through!

Good luck to all of those brave / mad souls travelling Oop North. August will come round fast - in the meantime we can fall back on our other specialist topics: middle aged women, flat pack kitchens, cheeses, ailments and Br...

"Thank you for supporting Queens Park Rangers Steep Staircase"... and I thought I'd signed up for a rollercoaster.

The absolute obviousness of the Br at the end of your post escaped me for a few moments and I was left wondering what the rest of the Br... could be. Got as far as breasts and Brian McCarthy before it suddenly sunk in!

We can mix it up a bit in June / July: flat pack women and middle-aged kitchens (with mitred joints for Ted H).

Thanks for some outstanding articles this season Clive. That February run would be enough to have put most people into some form of rehab.

Really interesting point about our choice of managers. Reading it, it reminded me of Tottenham before they finally got it right with Poch.

Defensive disciplinarian George Graham from arch enemies - technical attacking coach and club legend Hoddle - foreign coach who tried to bring in new ideas (Santini) - foreign coach promoted from within, with more sympathy to the 'English' way (Jol) - foreign supposedly 'elite' coach, Ramos - old school, old English manager, Redknapp - back to young, cool 'progressive' foreign coach, AVB - back to English, tactics are bullsh!t, Sherwood - and then finally the nearly perfect manager.

More by luck than judgement, or at least by process of elimination or law of averages.

Does that mean one of our next ten or so might turn out to be revolutionary, revelatory?

Webber's point is such a good one. When people say 'this manager won't work under a DoF' I just think - well, he should become a DoF then. As he says, British managers need to learn to work as part of a team (some do, obviously). I get the fear of being blamed for something that's not their fault. But that's the game.

Bare bones.

The Tottenham comparison raises far more questions than it does answers.

You have Levy who favours a continental system, while being stridently all-controlling; a series of hit-and-miss DoFs (Arnesen, Comolli, Pleat, Baldini, Mitchell); and varying profiles of coach/manager as you describe. At no point has it ever been completely harmonious and without compromise on all sides (bar Levy - excepting the time HR coerced him into signing Parker) and lingering tension between Poch and Levy is a constant background hum even now.

The moment of success was the stars aligning for an exceptional young coach without the clout to yet demand too much; leftover signings from previous failed regimes who had acclimatised to English football; the emergence of Kane; and a Pleat-advised influx of young English players who unexpectedly turned out to be instant first team material. In hindsight this is now viewed as all the pieces seamlessly falling into place in a smooth model - but this was not so. The years running up to that prove you can put all the machinery and ingredients into place but the magic moment when things click can remain elusive.
