Possibly a misjudgement but accepted as such and taken down. You'd think one of the finest broadcasters of his generation would be entitled to a bit of slack, maybe a slapped wrist, but no, sacked instantly. They've always hated him, God knows why.
It's fair enough to say "stay off twitter" and I wish more people would but Baker is a radio personality, he needs to be on there to do his job. And saying stuff others don't is the whole point of what he brings to the BBC - what I like is that unlike some others he doesn't do that in a tedious WUM style.

Contentious one really, impossible to know if his action of tweeting the image had racist intent, you'd think not because it's Danny Baker and to my knowledge, he's not a racist.
A chimp is not racist is it? People who associate a chimp with black people you'd assume have race issues.
There you go, this is our modern world - we used to respond to racism and offensive behaviour but now people actively seek it out often where there is none. Crazy.
'Never occurred to me because, well, mind not diseased'.
Well put, Danny Baker. What a fckin world we live in now, an honest mistake and he's out on his ear.
people phoning into radio London this morning almost universally saying it was deliberate and he is a racist. One bloke said he should be prosecuted as it was a hate crime. ....Its a minefield these days for people of a certain age
A world without forgiveness is a harsh and lonely place. He didn't help himself with his defence, "I didn't mean to ridicule millions of people, just a few" though.

I would say fair enough if I could see what the joke that Baker actually intended was,

What joke did he intend?
I concur. Saying black people are apes is a racist trope that goes back 2 centuries in the UK's mass media. He was saying it was trying to say it was a circus - bit of a reach imo and could have been displayed in ways that weren't using an image that has been flooding around alt right twitter accounts since the birth
Toast's is an interesting point if it wasn't for the fact that comparing black people to apes has been a racist trope in this country for around 200 years, rather than a reach on behalf of The Offended
Last post from me - you don't have to be a virulent racist in order to do something that has a racist bent, we are after all socialised in a insidiously racist society. But that also means you don't get to just hand wave it away without critique.
And as a man with as much broadcast experience as Baker, and one who has no doubt witnessed racism first hand, I am staggered by his pleas of ignorance on this tbh
He is or was a highly paid media professional and has a fundamental responsibility to be aware of the context in which he operates regardless of purported intent.
He deserves the sack for being gobsmackingly oblivious just as much as anything else. The world hasn't changed that much around him for what he posted to have become so much more offensive than it would have been however many years ago. Anyone claiming otherwise is a disingenuous prick quite frankly.
Returning to his old defensive wheeze now playing the victim to pompous establishment snowflakes is equally asinine. I grew up listening to him and was very fond of him over the years but the man has bought his plot, dug his grave, jumped in, and brought the soil in over himself.

I really like Danny Baker and am prepared to accept that he made a mistake however if it was simply a gaff on his part then it was one of monumental stupidity and I think that the BBC were absolutely right to give him the boot.

If the circus thing was ment to be the joke then I'm afraid it just ain't funny, to be honest I'm not a royalist but I find that picture he put up very offensive, I might also add I'm a big fan of Mr Baker. What was he thinking ???
AND WHEN I DREAM , I DREAM ABOUT YOU AND WHEN I SCREAM I SCREAM ABOUT YOU!!!!!

As Robith says comparing black people to chimps is a long established racist trope and one that Danny Baker would have seen first hand at Millwall in the form of monkey chants and bananas aimed at black players.
I don't believe he went to the trouble of coming up with the idea, finding that image and composing the Tweet without thinking it would be found grossly offensive.
