'Never occurred to me because, well, mind not diseased'.

Well put, Danny Baker. What a fckin world we live in now, an honest mistake and he's out on his ear.

On another note a friend of Mrs P was disciplined and not allowed to take in any “ethnic” kids for a while as a foster parent for calling a baby a “ chunky monkey” whilst getting her dressed at a baby shower the baby is an African whose real mother tried to drown her and who thinks she is possessed , Mrs P’s mate has nothing but love for these kids she takes in and is devastated she also had a 10 year old mixed race kid who because of this was taken to another foster parent
These so called do gooders cause nothing but aggro

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Gutted; love his radio show and have always liked him as a broadcaster.

However; given what the media are like it was at best a huge error of judgement and can't really see what alternative the BBC had.

He may well have posted pictures of apes etc dressed as humans in the past but given the high profile, 'colour' and amount of other shite going around on social media on the subject he should have seen the reaction a mile off. Daft git!

I don't think for 1 minute he's a racist or anything of the sort but retweeting that to 500,000 was putting your head on the chopping block.

As Robith says comparing black people to chimps is a long established racist trope and one that Danny Baker would have seen first hand at Millwall in the form of monkey chants and bananas aimed at black players.

I don't believe he went to the trouble of coming up with the idea, finding that image and composing the Tweet without thinking it would be found grossly offensive.
[Post edited 9 May 2019 13:05]

I think it's quite possible that he did though - go to the trouble without thinking that. Job-ending stuff mind you - giving the benefit of the doubt on the racism card my first thought was that he must have had a few to be that thick on that day.

I don't follow Danny Baker at all these days but if he really is strangely amused by photos of 'monkeys and apes dressed as human beings' then someone could do him a favour by showing the examples, and the more the better for his sake.

I like Danny Baker and follow him on twitter. But that is ridiculous. Only one outcome if you're tweeting that.

The whole issue sums up modern attitudes in this bullshit PC world we live in.

Yes the tweet was crass and in bad taste but to lose your career over it..... do me a favour.

I'm 5'8" and often get called short or worse. Do I make a fuss of it? (Can happily sit in Mu without knee abuse!)

I still find it odd that 'famous' people are followed on Twitter.

Just a quick note - he hasn't lost his career, he's lost one of his jobs, he'll replace that with another one soon enough

I would say fair enough if I could see what the joke that Baker actually intended was,

What joke did he intend?

The chimp was dressed as a prince, he's used the same photo for one of the other royal babies as well and used to have a segment in his show called chimps dressed as famous people. It was daft but not really racist

Dont forget good old Autie Beeb has sacked him before for calling out a referee and telling the world that in his opinion the referee he had seen at a match that night was 'corrupt'.

He also resigned twice from the beeb before that but the beeb would accept his contract, and merely extended ut.

Also note he is about to start a UK wide tour entitled 'good time charlies back' , nbut not that i'm suggesting that ticket sales needed boosting you understand.

Anyway, despite all this i like the guy a lot, find him funny, open, opinionated etc etc.
He'll be back.

I know I have caused offence before through my actions that were perceived by the recipient as being highly offensive when that was entirely absent from my intent.

Didn’t stop that person from assuming I was a horrible (unt and I was entirely beyond redemption. Reducing all of my years on the planet and anything good or decent about me to zero. I was and will forever be a (unt to that person. Even though my initial action had been completely innocent and without any underlaying meaning.

I often call my 4 1/2 year old a 'cheeky monkey', because he is.

However, when at the kiddies gym, playground, snakes & ladders, in fact anywhere public in the TW postcode area we live in I have to hold back in case anyone is offended. Is that right? Should I not be allowed to call my son that because he's a lively lad that likes to lark around?

Are people really offended or are other people being offended on their behalf?

Last post from me - you don't have to be a virulent racist in order to do something that has a racist bent, we are after all socialised in a insidiously racist society. But that also means you don't get to just hand wave it away without critique.

And as a man with as much broadcast experience as Baker, and one who has no doubt witnessed racism first hand, I am staggered by his pleas of ignorance on this tbh

I don't think for a second that Danny Baker's racist having read his books and listened to his various radio shows etc over the years.

He clearly didn't think this through and made an honest mistake. Now he's apologised and removed it as soon as it was pointed out that it could be misconstrued as racist.

In grown up life, someone else would point it out to him and the culprit would sheepishly apologise. On twitter they try to ruin your life forever. It's pathetic.

- stupid thing to do, should have seen that coming a mile away. You should always expect to lose your job for things like that, unless you're the Chelsea captain.

- the country's ongoing fascination with various quests for apologies is weird and pointless.

- Twitter is a fcking cesspit.

In his interview outside his house earlier on the news, he said he told the BBC 'to go f*ck themselves'....

His stage show is the funniest thing I've seen in years. Top drawer comedians would cut off their right arm to be that hilariously funny. I actually cried through laughter during one story at the Bush Empire.

stupid thing to do. Real stupid. But some of the pc malarkey does my head in. The other day on Newstalk radio in Ireland Pat Kenny had a woman on who said that children should seek the other childs consent to play kiss chasing or to hold their hand. We're talking 4-8 year olds here. Real innocent stuff.

And don't get me started on people complaining about programs like fireman sam or postman Pat because they are gender specific.

Sad to hear this, really sad. I love Danny Baker, and I don't believe he's a racist for a second.

Does he deserve to be put in front of a disciplinary board for this? Absolutely. At best, this was incredibly dumb and negligent, at worst it's racism, intended or otherwise.

Does he deserve to be sacked without a fair hearing? No, no-one does.

If short people (and I'm shorter than you are) had been oppressed for centuries and when they dared to demand equality were frequently compared to goblins and continually harassed on the subject then yes, I'd say if someone called you a goblin you'd be perfectly within your rights to make a fuss.

If I shared a racist meme on my twitter account, I'd get sacked, no questions asked

¯_(ツ)_/¯

And if you intended it as racist and it was actually racist then fine. Cause and effect.

But if you didn't intend it as racist and it wasn't actually racist in context then that'd be shit and you'd be wronged and utterly pissed off about it.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

We live in the worst time.

EDIT: Also, if it was racist then one of the humans would be black or a chimp or whatever the racist version of this is. He was trying to say the whole thing was a bit of a circus.

Admittedly, not very funny but Twitter just wants its pound of flesh. I was listening to Radio 5 at lunch and a woman on there was ranting about it and him and when the host asked if there was anything he could say or do to make it right, the woman said no.

Is unintended offence actually unforgivable now?

Shite.

Fkn idiotic to portray something as unambiguous and clear-cut as this as some sort of new "PC Brigade" shift in modern values. Middle aged white snowflakes will mince words and twist moralities inside out to avoid thinking of anyone different to them with some common decency.

Frankly, I cannot contain my outrage that someone I don't follow on a social media platform I don't use said something I didn't hear that might have offended me. Others have said it best, presumably, and I could not agree more (in principle).

Whoever they are should be ashamed for saying whatever they said and apologise to me immediately.

Actually, forget that, I have decided to sue for compensation.
