Ding Ding! Another one on the pre-season bingo on 13:21 - Jul 9 with 2118 views | kensalriser | No, after we haven't won the first couple of games fans will declare that the players are disgracefully unfit and question why the club/players can't meet the basic requirements of professional football like whoever's top of the division with two wins.

Or they will win the first few games but then fail to keep their 100% record intact through November whereupon the fans will declare that the pre-season was too tough.

It's such a bullsht football cliche. Managers love it because there's no palpable way to prove they were unfit before he came, nor that they're fitter now he's been here a few weeks, but it buys him a few weeks grace. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Ding Ding! Another one on the pre-season bingo on 13:36 - Jul 9 with 2033 views | daveB | Always seems mad to me how much fitness work they do in pre season, it's the one time of year when they have no pressure on games playing games winning points etc so can really work on team shape and a way of playing, set pieces etc but spend most of the 4 weeks running up hills. The way players are now they really should be given a fitness programme for the 2 months they have off and then come straight back to football work

That's the one. Since Gerry Francis first time around circa 1991, the team has trained harder every year. So by that , each player would run a marathon in 45 minutes. [Post edited 9 Jul 2019 13:43]

TBF, judging by their Instagrams, a lot of them go away to/with personal trainers. Dan Edwards who's worked at QPR has been working with Dan James all summer, Grant Hall has been in a training camp, as has Eze and a few others, Ilias Chair seemed to do a hell of a lot of distance running in between sitting on a beach and sitting in the front seat of a car listening to horrendous music. Exceptions - Joe Lumley and Ryan Manning went on a lads lads lads holiday to one of those swimming pools that's absolutely rammed full of good looking people jumping up and down to music even worse than that in Ilias Chair's car. But then Lumley's a keeper, and Ryan Manning is the fittest lad in the world, so it doesn't matter. - Jack Wilshere likes to work his way through 40 fags a day in LA hot tubs to get him ready for the rigours of half a dozen ill-judged sliding tackles followed by three months in the treatment room.

Agreed. There's a basic mantra in training - you get fit to train, not train to get fit. They should be arriving in great shape.

Lumley and Manning’s summer jollies looked ridiculous. Could see the booze wafting from their pores in the first few photos club put up. By no means am I saying players shouldn’t have time off, but those two especially aren’t guaranteed their spot in the team next year and their choice to go he’ll for leather with the lads as opposed to a low key summer seems odd. But then that’s just social media and not the whole story. If we are going by what we see online then Adel Taarabt is the fittest man on the planet. And yes.... Chair’s music was hideous

Well I think there ARE ways of measuring fitness now. They wear those vests, do all sorts of tests and have all sorts of readings done. As you say though, no manager is ever going to say they haven't improved the players fitness levels!

Exactly. How unfit can you even get in a month considering they all look after themselves anyway (Adel excepted)?

Sorry, a further exemption - Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford spent a summer shouting 'beans beans beans' at a fancy dress party in their hotel room to which only they were invited. LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE.
