Ashes thread 17:11 - Jul 15 with 91139 viewsjohnhoop

Now that the World Cup’s done and dusted we can turn our attention to the next major event.
For me the most interesting questions about team selection are;
1) Do we open with Jason Roy? For me it’s a no brainer. I know all the arguments against- he doesn’t even open for Surrey, he struggles against the moving ball etc- but I feel that he’s in such good form and the alternatives are so mediocre that it would be silly not to. If he does come off he could give us control of the game in the first couple of hours. Him and Rory Burns for me.
2) Now that Jofra Archer has to have a place in the side, who are the other two quick bowlers going to be. If fit I guess Anderson has to play and I would give the third spot to Woakes but this means no place for Stuart Broad and the 90 mph+ Mark Wood.
3) Which spinner to go with - Ali or Rashid? Ali’s batting form seems to have dipped but it’s still not an easy decision to make.
Any thoughts?

He was batting so far out of his crease that he should’ve known it was missing the stumps and reviewed it.It was harder for the umpire from 22 yards away to readjust his vision to assume that he was 3 feet further forward than they normally are.

True, but the umps knew where he was batting as they had already pointed out to him that he was standing too far up the pitch. I don't think Warner will be buying Bancroft a beer tonight either, you would have thought he might have said something. Still, who cares?

3 down. But really want Smith. He is the key wicket for England this series. Get him cheaply and the Aussies wont score many.

Spot on. If we can get Smith anytime soon the Aussies will be struggling.

I’d be quite happy if he’s last man out if we get them all out for around 100 to 150.

What is beginning to concern me a bit is that despite the fact that Stokes has sprayed it around so much he’s relieved the pressure a lot for the Aussies, Root hasn’t brought Jimmy Anderson back despite him only bowling four overs. Either he’s not fully fit or it’s very puzzling captaincy.

Anderson not bowling again was a little confusing and/or worrying. But let's see what happened after lunch. Woakes had bowled well but Anderson is our main man

Looks like Anderson is potentially out of the match which if true is very bad news. Stokes is nowhere near an adequate replacement for him.

Very good Davie.

That could be a massive blow given this is session 1. It's going to put a huge strain on the other bowlers to get 20 (Ok 17 now) wickets.

If we get one of these out then we're into the tail. Still not convinced that they'll make 200.

Some abysmal umpiring decisions in this game already. Smith should never have been given out just now, ball clearly missing the stumps and it was overturned on review, then Wade was plumb LBW but given not out, overturned on review.
