Forgotten foes from Second Division 14:22 - Aug 19 with 7182 viewsNorthernr

So all that Bristol City nostalgia, and talk about how terrified we used to be of Scott Murray, got me thinking last week. Who are the players we feared playing/loathed seeing in those three years in the Second Division and then immediately forgot all about once we were promoted.

Remember we used to have real problems with Martin Bullock and ben Burgess, hated Leon Knight and Wayne Andrews.

Thinking of doing a piece for AKUTRs on it so any others greatly appreciated...

Didn’t a certain Bobby Zamora score a few against us for Brighton at that level?

At the other end of the pitch we never seemed to do well against a Reading side with Graeme Murty in their defence.

We didn’t beat them in 9 attempts from the beginning of the 97/98 season until the start of the 09/10 one — and only scored 3 times against them in that period. Murty was basically an ever present in their defence during that time.

And to rub salt into the wound he only ever scored two goals for them:
On 30 April 2006, Murty scored only his second goal, from a penalty, in 280 league and cup appearances when Reading played Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the 2005—06 season. It ensured that Reading reached 106 points, a record for the second tier of English football.

I definitely didn't hate him. In fact, I was always pleased when he played against us, but who could forget the slimnfit Kevin Pressman?

Picture him in one goal & Neville Southall in the other!

I can't remember any individual, but I disliked all of the Peterborough team when they deservedly thrashed us on Danny Shitu's debut. Watching him that night who would have thought Danny could become a legend?

On the plus side of opponents, didn't Paul Murray score a winning goal against Bristol City that helped us to second place?

Can’t say I have any fond memories of games against Crewe.

Graham Coughlan of Plymouth Argyle always impressed me, a proper no-nonsense CB but fair with it.

Couple that spring to mind

Graham Kavanagh (Cardiff Stoke after that I think) always looked a very good player at League 1 head and shoulders above most midfielders and a big part of them going up

Marco Gabbiadini Hated him remember him scoring I think for Northampton against us at Home in a drab 1-0 defeat. Played at a few clubs around that time

Jason Koumas I think already mentioned is a decent shout. Lloyd Owusu was a bit of a to££er as I remember

Fun times though some of my best time supporting us

Jamie Cureton, until he joined us.

I seem to remember Marco Gabbiadini being a pain when he played for Northampton. Also never understood why we didn't sign Dean Kitson when he played for Cambridge

Edit. Just seen above post 're MG

Wayne Andrews at Oldham used to be a pain, I think he got sent off in that playoff game

Northampton used to beat us every time but struggle to remember any of their players

Nathan Tyson at Wycombe ripped us apart in one half but the wind was mental that day and we came back to draw 2-2

Add in Danny Coyne the keeper at Grimsby, always had a great game when we played them

Didn’t Joe Kinnear take a disliking for us when he was Luton manager?
He slated us on a few occasions.

I remember that exact game, some bloke (who I believe now sits near me berating him for the full 90 mins) and then he does the unthinkable, must've been April 2001 ish.

I had a fear of Stuart Barlow, formerly of Everton and then latterly of Tranmere came. Coupled with Jason Price. I believe Andy Thomson equalised on 89 mins in 2002, only to be undone by a fckin Stuart Barlow winner in injury time. (Edit. I seem to recall Price had been signed on the Friday before the game from Wrexham, Swansea or some such).

Koumas may well have been involved too.

Wasn’t there a young Bobby Zamora playing wide for Brighton, skinny as a rake, diving all over the shop, getting booed off the park and then scoring or setting up their winner down here?

Think that was League One

Little black fella, I think his first name was Jermaine. He always played well against us.

This next one isn’t a player, but a referee. Prosser the tosser. Can’t remember his first name.
He refereed our home 4-3 game vs Wycombe. He sent two of theirs off, and we still booed him at the end.

Iain Hume always looked good against us.

This thread has given me flashbacks to the autumn of 2001 and consecutive defeats against Wrexham, Yeovil, Northfeckinhampton and Peterborough.

Suffering since 1978.

Andy Rammell of Wycombe I seem to recall we always found a bit of a handful.

Marcus Bean sent off on his debut for a punch up with him wasn’t he?

Last one then I must get back to work...

Forget about individuals...

Northampton-bloody-Town.

They were with us in that league in 01/02 and were rubbish, and again in 02/03 and got relegated by absolutely miles, yet we still never actually managed to beat them. 2 home defeats and 2 away draws if I remember right.

And for a teenager living in Wellingborough (about 10 miles from Northampton) that was bloomin' rubbish

Marco Gabbiadini used to torment us in those games. Bastard.

Also, although I didn't attend said game, I know full well the story and how it came into QPR legend of the time, so can I also make a nomination for the deckchair at Hartlepool who that 'Pool fan managed to get tackled by in that half time competition they had...?

Technically not a QPR foe but surely worthy of a mention...

What made the deckchair such a legend is that they let the pool supporter have a second go and the deck chair did him again!

Makes me chuckle every time i think of it

I remember going to a League Cup game at Northampton (maybe 2001). Unreserved seating and Rangers flooded into the away end and a load of us (inc me and my Dad) had to be escorted round the pitch to the empty stand to the side. Can't remember the score.

Think we also went to a League game there, in the home end. Might've been 2-2? I grew up in Rushden (about 20 miles from Northampton) so we used to go to loads of those East Midlands games.

There was a 0-0 at Peterborough in that old terrace with awful shallow steps (for a 12 year old anyway).

We made Stuart Barlow look like Messi in that 9 man Everton game in 93 ?

“Our shoes you should be mending our shoes”
To the poor folk of Northampton

Also can I add Rob Styles he hated us in the championship but that Wycombe game was something else

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

The ref for that 0-0 draw at the end of the season against Crewe was the worst. Was it two players sent off for failing to retreat for a free kick? Which roughly translated as Crewe players kicking it against ours at point blank range. I remember being very ‘annoyed’
