Chaps, spending a few days out there soon and would welcome the usual travel expertise and insight from the LFW community.

I've been once before on a mate of mine's second marriage stag do, so don't feel I saw the best of what the city has to offer.

Many thanks

Someone somewhere will invariably tell you to visit the Time Out Marketplace. Ignore them, they don't know what they're talking about. instead, go about 5 minutes north of there to the Barrios, and meander up the steep narrow streets drinking Port out of someone's front room for a euro a pop. you won't regret it.

if you can squeeze in, or have the inclination to, Benfica's ground the Estadio De Luz is an amazing ground to watch a match in - it's a modern style Emirates Bowl done absolutely right. Plus, these days, you actually get to see Taarabt play there!

Can we not knock it?

Adel's playing well for Benfica, though you may feel more predisposed towards the hoops (Sporting) or the custard tarts (Belenenses).

Otherwise, good food and chilling out should cover the to-dos.

A magnificent football club, the love of our lives, finding a way to finally have its day in the sun.

Buy their equivalent of an oyster card at the manned booths at the entrance to the metro.
then add the 24 hour travelcard... trams trains and metro for about £3.80

great value.

if your seeing the sights try tram route 28. the most famous one, for a reason. however, dont get on it in town, instead go to the station, then walk 3 blocks directly back from the water front until you see the tram tracks crossing left to right. find a tram stop.... very common. and wait for the 28.
the perfect direction is for it to be going right, as thats the best trip, although left is very cool too, just not as long. but if you want the whole trip just stay on it.
if you get on it further up town its a long wait. i stood in 34 degrees heat for 2 hours for the 28..... but in the end, even that was worth it.

water front is great, hard rock good, mini christ the redeemer cool, the streets in the old town excellent.

Fully recommended

Cascais is pretty nice and lively. Been there a couple of times

Not a very ITK suggestion but the Ginjinha bar in Baixa is a nice place to stop off while wandering - standing in that square it's quite pleasant putting 2 or 3 of those down you for a bit of a lunchtime tipple.

There's a church very close by, and a street that runs up the side of it (to the right of the church if you're facing it) that has a few restaurants. We went into the first one on the right (but wouldn't be shocked if they're all similar quality) - had a very pleasant and affordable lunch there - very fresh. Would recommend eating when locals do, i.e. 2 or 3.

Sintra is a good day trip if you feel you have the time

The monastery in Belem is pretty stunning and worth a look, and Belem is also famous for it's custard tarts

Agree about Sintra, the palace (Palacio Nacional de Pena) there is definitely worth a visit.

Belense is a great place to visit. It's on the waterfront south of Lisbon. There's an amazing Vasco da Gama monument, its where he set sail for the Far East. There's a huge Cathedral and stadium all within a 10 minute walk from the train station,

Look out for Francesinha. Probably the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted.

Good suggestions above, Sintra, Cascais, Belem (waterfront, art museum, monastery, tarts). Would also add the Castle has great views and the ferry across from Cais do Sodre to the south bank is cheap (covered on the viva vagem card) and offers great views back to the city, although there's not actually much to do when you get to Almada

Time Out's marketing department must have took a long hard look at Borough Market and thought "we can make a killing here" - shame really as there's some nice food in there, just hugely overpriced and getting a seat is a ballache. Already rolled out to NYC, Boston and Chicago with London, Prague and Dubai coming soon.

Bairro Alto was much more fun, sipping Super Bock watching the funny little funicular do it's thing.

barrio alto is great for a wander and some drinks. Sintra was a nice getaway. Agree on the Time Out market...its nice, but you could be anywhere. loved the food in Lisbon, though if you dont like seafood, it gets a little limited. im there in a few weeks for a conference, cant wait.
