Needed to buy a cheap tv for one of my kids bedrooms.

Went on Currys website found a good priced 43" was about to order it suddenly a banner appears top of screen from Amazon Prime offering same TV at the same price saying its knocked down from £399 to £249, same price as Currys .

Currys wanted £10 to deliver, Amazon its free delivery.

So question is are Amazon & Curries pat of the same group or have Amazon just hijacked a Currys purchase?

If that’s as it sounds then it’s quite scary.

Basically means behemoths putting even the largest competitors out of business and heaven help small businesses.

Benefits consumers in the short term but we are heading towards control of the economy by a relative handful of companies, largely automated, and I’m struggling to understand how 8 billion people fit into that scenario.

Soon the only growth industry will be food banks.

Hmmm, i hear what you're saying, but if these massive corporations put all of the small ones out of business, damn sure they'll be putting the prices up pronto. A company like Amazon will most likely benefit people in the short-term but to irreparable damage to lots of things in the longer term. As it is in places like Cornwall, all of the towns have gone from having cool little sport shops and toy shops and stuff to be completely sh!t in quick time. We obviously can't halt progress, but that doesn't mean there isn't much to lament.

And speaking of Amazon, https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-50302392

Exactly. Once the competition is no longer there look out. Be careful what you wish for.

Whilst I understand the sentiment on a lot o this thread about the danger of big business, shopping local etc., DSG Retail, who own Currys, have a revenue somewhere near £10 Billion a year, so He’s hardly choosing Amazon over a mom and pop shop!

Can we not knock it?

Not sure why you would buy from Argos or Amazon when Richer Sounds and John Lewis offer price match and free 5/6 year warranties.

I work for a cybersecurity company and I would advise you to be very careful with what you connect to the internet. Even smart TVs (TVs!) leak your personal data back so you can be targeted. Anything labelled as "smart" is vulnerable.

OK, that may sound paranoid but we are seeing cyber attacks on critical infrastructure, like power networks. The bank accounts of casino users were hacked via an internet connected thermometer in a fishtank.

That's why there is no way I am having a smart meter and why I bought the non-networked version of the charger for my electric car.

It's certainly a concern but as our wifi at home hooks up our phones, tablets and Amazon Echo already, does then having a smart TV actually make any difference?
