I'm a big fan of Omeleto too. Obviously nothing like them but takes me back to 'Tales of the Unexpected' which I still occasionally catch and enjoy here and there.

Can't find a 'free' version but 'Wild Tales' is simply brilliant. A series of Argentinian short films but very dark and sinister. Saw it on channel 4 about 5 years ago and watched each of them about 10 times. Trailer below:

Thanks just watched it. It was well worth watching.
Dark humour and six interesting stories.
Some were a bit crazy!

Room at the Top is one of my favourite films.

I had read somewhere that it was based on Stendhal's The Red and the Black (1830) and somewhere else that it was based on Guy de Maupassant's Bel-Ami (1885). I have recently read both, and in my opinion, while there are some resemblances between The Red and the Black and Room at the Top, it's Bel-Ami which is much closer in spirit to Room at the Top. Even though both books were written in the nineteenth century, Bel-Ami feels much more contemporary. Bel-Ami is about the rapid rise of a journalist, Georges Duroy, who uses women, connections and cunning to get to the top of Parisian society. At the beginning of the book Duroy is a soldier in Algiers and he describes French soldiers stealing from the Algerian peasants. The Red and the Black is about the rise of a tutor who has been sponsored and educated by the church. The book is more difficult to understand because there is a lot more detail about the tensions between the monarchists and the liberals after the fall of Napoleon, which are reflected in the church. Everyone is aware that the heroic age of France has passed and cynicism is all-pervasive. Anyway, I really recommend Bel-Ami. I can't get over how good Maupassant is.

Some reflections in today's Independent on how Room at the Top was received when it was first released. It would never have occurred to me that it had an X rating (it now has a 12 rating).

Happened to find this the other day. I think it's the only full episode on YouTube. It should be a nice one for those of a certain age.

I’m pretty sure every episode is on YouTube. Or was last time I looked. Got me through the first couple of weeks of the first Lockdown.

Be seeing you Dennis
