That XTC released their last ever album:

The most innovative, influential and idiosyncratic band to walk the planet.

Apologies, I know it’s self indulgent and no one cares but it makes me feel emotional and old. That band infected my brain.

Going to annoy the wife and neighbours by playing this loud tonight and get so sh1t faced that I can’t remember my name.

Up the Rs!

Mate, why don't you try something different on their 20th anniversary!

I’ve woken to find that among my drunk purchases last night is Moving Pictures by Rush. No Cathy Barry though.

I was sh1tfaced and Mel owes me £6.95p.

Ha ha ha

You won't be disappointed, well, you better not be.
It's their biggest seller, personally, much as I like it, the album before, Permanent Waves, is my favourite, so you better procure that as well.
Currently my front room resembles a hoarders convention of CDs and vinyl as much of it is going on eBay.

Looking forward to listening to it Mel. You and my cousin Mike ,from Rockaway Beach, have been banging on about them for so long that I feel I owe it to you to give them a whirl.

Wish me luck skipper.

Tremendous this. I'm listening to the album now. Not come across it before.

I was chatting to a mate a few weeks ago. I asked him what he thought of XTC.

This was his response

"Swindon band. Quite big at the time but regarded as a bit art schoolish.
Sort of band Radiohead fans 10 years later would have liked.
Thames Valley middle class punks"

He got the Swindon band bit correct.

A criticism that was constantly thrown at them was that they were too clever by half and that it was all far too intellectual. And they were from Swindon.

Apart from the Swindon thing, the rest is bollocks. Whatever too clever is meant to mean, you don’t need copious qualifications to get their music. You may think it’s shit and you may well be right but its not clever and not preachy. They don’t presume to have to tell you your rights or that anything pre 1977 is shit.

They’ve made twelve albums and each one is good at the very least . Each album is different to the last one. It goes from thrash’s two minute blasts of energy to orchestral romps on the Marlborough Downs.

It won’t be for all and they will never ever be a “cool band” that can be quoted about and mentioned as a cool influence. The Clash have that sown up. Gordon Bennett, Know Your Rights? And XTC are too clever by half.

I asked Mick Jones once what he thought about XTC outside the Loft (00/01 v Stockport, lost 0-3) he shrugged and said “Swindon’s finest eh”? As in they’re shit, country bumpkins.

XTC are a great fu cking band. I recommend each album for entirely different reasons. But you don’t need a degree to listen to it and forget where the f uck they come from.

Yep they were a great band and I think this topic has been done before?

Great lyrics here from my favourite XTC track.

"Love on a Farmboy’s Wages"

High climbs the summer sun
High stands the corn
And tonight when my work is done
We will borrow your father's carriage
We will drink and prepare for marriage
Soon my darling, soon my darling

Shilling for the fellow who brings the sheep in
Shilling for the fellow who milks the herd
Shilling for the fellow with a wife for keeping
How can we feed love on a farmboy's wages?

Deep under winter snow
Deep lay the lambs
And tonight by the full moon's glow
Flask of wine on my feather bedding
We will drink and prepare for wedding
Soon my darling, soon my darling

Shilling for the fellow who brings the sheep in
Shilling for the fellow who milks the herd
Shilling for the fellow with a wife for keeping
How can we feed love on a farmboy's wages?

People think that I'm no good
Painting pictures, carving wood
Be a rich man if I could
But the only job I do well is here on the farm
On the farm
And it's breaking my back

We will borrow your father's carriage
We will drink and prepare for marriage
Soon my darling, soon my darling

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.
