I’ve woken to find that among my drunk purchases last night is Moving Pictures by Rush. No Cathy Barry though.

You won't be disappointed, well, you better not be. It's their biggest seller, personally, much as I like it, the album before, Permanent Waves, is my favourite, so you better procure that as well. Currently my front room resembles a hoarders convention of CDs and vinyl as much of it is going on eBay.

I was chatting to a mate a few weeks ago. I asked him what he thought of XTC.
This was his response
"Swindon band. Quite big at the time but regarded as a bit art schoolish. Sort of band Radiohead fans 10 years later would have liked. Thames Valley middle class punks"

He got the Swindon band bit correct.
A criticism that was constantly thrown at them was that they were too clever by half and that it was all far too intellectual. And they were from Swindon.
Apart from the Swindon thing, the rest is bollocks. Whatever too clever is meant to mean, you don’t need copious qualifications to get their music. You may think it’s shit and you may well be right but its not clever and not preachy. They don’t presume to have to tell you your rights or that anything pre 1977 is shit.
They’ve made twelve albums and each one is good at the very least . Each album is different to the last one. It goes from thrash’s two minute blasts of energy to orchestral romps on the Marlborough Downs.
It won’t be for all and they will never ever be a “cool band” that can be quoted about and mentioned as a cool influence. The Clash have that sown up. Gordon Bennett, Know Your Rights? And XTC are too clever by half.
I asked Mick Jones once what he thought about XTC outside the Loft (00/01 v Stockport, lost 0-3) he shrugged and said “Swindon’s finest eh”? As in they’re shit, country bumpkins.
XTC are a great fu cking band. I recommend each album for entirely different reasons. But you don’t need a degree to listen to it and forget where the f uck they come from.
