| Gut Feelings on New Signings 16:35 - Aug 17 with 9810 views | Antti_Heinola | I always think new signings are interesting for how we feel about them, because as fans I have a theory our initial reaction to them is very seldom close to how we feel a year or two down the line. Charlie austin is a good example for me of one I thought was a brilliant signing and was a brilliant signing and he was everything I thought and hoped he would be - and more. But then you have Cousins, who I thought was a super signing, just what we needed, and was never really close to it. I remember being vaguely excited about Trevor Sinclair, but he turned out much better than we could've thought. I thought Danny Cullip was a perfect signing, and he was for about 3 months, then fell off the edge of the cliff. I thought Clint Hill was a depressing signing - and Derry. Er... I was REALLY excited about Danny Nardiello - thought that was a cracking signing. Awful. I thought Park was a great signing, even as I didn't love the way it was done. Alex Smithies I kind of thought was second choice to Bentley and wasn't excited... Other than Austin, do we ever really know? Sometimes the worst signings turn out to be the best and vice versa. | |

| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 16:54 - Aug 17 by Northernr | Austin, like you say, fcking great signing straight off the bat. Only downside was I'd wanted him from Swindon when he was cheaper. That same summer I was thrilled with Matt Phillips as well who I thought subsequently flattered to deceive somewhat. My write up for Steven Caulker was pretty legendary. "Even QPR can't mess this up, perfect signing" - turned out to be addicted to just about everything you can be addicted to. Speaking of which, aren't we due another Guardian puff piece soon? Also liked Mutch. Smithies loved, loved him at Huddersfield. Clint Hill was disappointed we didn't get Dusko Tosic on a perm instead. Dom Ball I said was crap and the signing was bent. Junior Hoilett was the one. God I thought we'd arrived. |
Diakite for me, we had the new Patrick Viera. As it turns out, just the red cards bit of him.
| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 03:05 - Aug 18 with 1532 views | timcocking | No question it's always impossible to predict. Which is why the people insisting with absolute conviction that the player is absolutely sh!t always annoys me, because as well as being counter productive, it's just stupid. Nobody ever knows for certain. Never initially wanted anybody less than Clint Hill, Shaun Derry, Paddy Kenny or Jamie Mackie, so i've stopped second guessing. Paul Furlong the best example i can think of. What's sad nowadays, is i feel the need each time to cross my fingers that whoever we're signing will actually try their best, as opposed to just sit and laugh taking the money while they play cards or golf. Even reading the name Jose Bosingwa makes me agitated...man i hope i bump into him late at night one day with nobody around. | | | |

David Bardsley Martin Allen Paul Furlong All players who got pelters from QPR fans in their early days and are now seen as legends.

| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 07:22 - Aug 18 with 1455 views | DannyPaddox | I remember early in a season on the Lower Loft concourse having a half-time conversation with someone who was saying they weren’t sure about this Austin bloke. I’d seen enough to know he was a decent player but as he hadn’t scored in his first few games there were noises from some in the crowd - not quite getting on his back - but you could hear them - the small impatient grunts of boo-boys preparing to rut. And then Chazza scores his first of many and they were never heard again. I’ve got a few wrong though. I thought Gary Borrowdale would lead us into the Europa League. [Post edited 18 Aug 2020 7:25]

He looked too short and I wasn't convinced he'd ever be a decent CB. After that I realised I know f-all about spotting talent at football and treat every signing on its merits.

Granero is a bit like Zelic in that we consider him a bad signing but he just didn't work out for us - very decent player with a good career apart from his time at LR.
| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 08:50 - Aug 18 with 1301 views | Toast_R | Andy Johnson. Always thought he was very good and was sick of him scoring past us. My only concern was that he was always injured. When he arrived he looked sharp but then was always injured. Keiron Dyer. How long did he last before his season was over, 3.7 minutes into the Bolton game wasnt it? The heartbreaking thing for him was, he was actually brilliant player. Dragged us into an FA replay with a superb performance and goal against West Brom which we actually went on to win. If only his body wasn't a car crash. | | | |
| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 08:54 - Aug 18 with 1295 views | Rs_Holy | Emmanuel Ledesma was a strange one... came with quite a bit of hype from Flavio...loved his debut (against Barnsley I think it was?)...then after the hattrick in the League Cup I thought we had a world class player on our hands. But he just disappeared quite quickly... Seemed to do it at every club he went to. [Post edited 18 Aug 2020 8:56]

| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 09:05 - Aug 18 with 1270 views | Mistication92 | The two Chileans Isla and Vargas, after the WC I thought they'd be great. Also liked Suk-Young, TBH looking at the squad in retrospect, how did they go down?! Caulker, Mutch, Isla, Vargas, Austin, Phillips, Faurlin, Hoilett. That's decent. Bit ropey central defence and keeper but Dunne and Hill could've been rock-like enough to get 17th. Clive you should do a in hindsight column on that season. | | | |

Oh I hated Bardsley at first, thought he was useless, mate of my dads used to slate him every week and have arguments with a group in front of us who liked him. that went on for 2 years until the 92/93 season when he scored a free kick against Southampton and the group in front jumped all over him and we had to admit we were wrong.

Problem was that when the Bard first arrived he was poor. They played him at RB, when he had previously played at RM. So, he would stand off his winger and let him cross and did it all game, every game. This drive the crowd mad. However, he then changed to get closer and used his pace to stop them from running in behind. Remember this was a step up for him and he was unsure about what to do in this new position. When he learned he was actually a class above most of these wingers, then the true Bard arrived.

| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 21:14 - Aug 17 by ted_hendrix | I was at the fakes ground when he got sent off, he was fuming and the reason being one of the fakes players who was stood behind him shouted 'jacks' as the ball came their way, 'jacks' apparently means leave it, it's my ball so Cureton left it and got conned he then lost his rag with the fakes player resulting in him getting sent off. You'll never believe this but we went on to lose 1-0 in a thoroughly dull game. Fake bastards. |
That was Steve facking Sidwell, who had a good old laugh about it in the press conference afterwards.

| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 09:40 - Aug 18 with 1184 views | daveB | to add a few more I had high hopes for DJ Campbell, - used to play for my Dads team in Acton, always scored goals and coming off a good season at Blackpool but looked pretty woeful for us Leroy Griffiths - After that goal against Chelsea I really thought we had found a special player Gregory Goodridge - He looked dynamite on his debut in the cup against Oxford but ended up a bit crap Simon Walton - really excited we signed him, looked like a really good player but never happened for him Scott Sinclair - was only on loan but had heard such good things about him but well he wasn't very good or interested | | | |
| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 09:57 - Aug 18 with 1143 views | robith | Been mentioned a couple of times, but as an avid Football Manager player in my youth, couldn't believe we'd got Granero. Exactly my favourite type of player. Main memory of him is that game vs West Ham where Hughes played 442 with the smallest midfield you'd ever seen whilst West Ham's orc like centre 3 smashed us to bit like the opening sequence of Lord of the Rings. There he was, stood forlorn on the right wing, looking completely broken | | | |
| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 10:01 - Aug 18 with 1123 views | cpgerber | Rio Ferdinand. Never expected him to be massive for us, but thought his experience would be vital to others around him. Eventually pitching in with only 11 appearances and not much of a contribution was a massive disappointment. | | | |

Played really well the first game and then our defence imploded. Rio and the Chilean signed to play in a three/five at the back which was abandoned quickly. Had tried to play Dunne on the left of the three, he was very uncomfortable there. Have to remember that Rio, especially at that time, had his wife's illness and his family on his mind as well.
| Gut Feelings on New Signings on 10:25 - Aug 18 with 1097 views | terryb | I was very happy with two ex Blackburn players we signed. Like Clive & others, I thought Hoilett was the signing of the century & we would be challenging for Europe that season! To my credit, I also loved the signing of Ryan Nelsen. He had carried Samba for many a season & received no credit for it. Samba, like Caulker, won many headers in their opponents penalty area but few in their own & gained their reputation on goals they scored rather than their defending. Park Ji-Sung also excited me & it took quite a while before I accepted that Hoilett & Park could be as bad for us as they were! Perhaps my worst "gut feeling" was the centre forward that Gary Waddock signed, Polish or Hungarian & I certainly can't be bothered to look up his name. I had to adjust my expectations about ten seconds after the kick off at Burnley in the first game of the season! [Post edited 18 Aug 2020 10:37]

Sort of similar. I thought we were signing a full-back and we already had Dawes and Neill at the time, but I thought "former England u-21 striker" Coney would be a useful big-man-up-front we could bring on as sub and an upgrade on Leroy. Took me approximately 2 minutes at West Ham to change my mind about Parker.

Exactly. It's why they top the cr*p managers league for me, they didn't just spaff money, they couldn't get anything out of what looked like quite sound signings in positions we needed.
