Gut Feelings on New Signings 16:35 - Aug 17 with 9825 viewsAntti_Heinola

I always think new signings are interesting for how we feel about them, because as fans I have a theory our initial reaction to them is very seldom close to how we feel a year or two down the line.

Charlie austin is a good example for me of one I thought was a brilliant signing and was a brilliant signing and he was everything I thought and hoped he would be - and more.

But then you have Cousins, who I thought was a super signing, just what we needed, and was never really close to it.

I remember being vaguely excited about Trevor Sinclair, but he turned out much better than we could've thought.

I thought Danny Cullip was a perfect signing, and he was for about 3 months, then fell off the edge of the cliff.

I thought Clint Hill was a depressing signing - and Derry. Er...

I was REALLY excited about Danny Nardiello - thought that was a cracking signing. Awful.

I thought Park was a great signing, even as I didn't love the way it was done.

Alex Smithies I kind of thought was second choice to Bentley and wasn't excited...

Other than Austin, do we ever really know? Sometimes the worst signings turn out to be the best and vice versa.

Bare bones.

Two signings from Manchester United for me.

I didn't like Ray Wilkins before he joined us. I thought he had rightly earned his crab nickname, having watched him in a mainly turgid England team for years.* How wrong I was - he was utterly superb.

At the other end of the scale, how on earth did John Curtis ever get to play professional football? I couldn't believe just how sh*t he was. I reckon Gus Caesar was better than him and I was at that Sunderland match.

*I wasn't born in 1983. I love that year for what it meant to the club and to me.

Steady on

Good shout, I adored Vargas before he came here, couldn't believe it.

Think this was down to Redknapp more than Vargas.
Never got a proper shake, Redknapp had no idea what to do with him.

Bare bones.

Sort of similar. I thought we were signing a full-back and we already had Dawes and Neill at the time, but I thought "former England u-21 striker" Coney would be a useful big-man-up-front we could bring on as sub and an upgrade on Leroy.

Took me approximately 2 minutes at West Ham to change my mind about Parker.

Got a bit of a heads up about Paul Parker from Alec Stock who was umpiring our cricket match (along with Ted Drake) when we'd signed him and Dean Coney. He told me that Rangers had got an excellent player and his opinion was good enough for me as he wasn't too bad a judge of a player.

Recent signings (not mentioned so far) that I thought would be the Dogs but ended up being only bollox

Rob Hulse
Andy Johnson
Sandro
Leroy Fer
Fabio
Jay Bothroyd

In the late 70's I had a mate who was a Man Utd supporter but would only go to watch games if I went with him, yes I know. The trade off was that he had to come to qpr ....

Any way this was at the time of Steve Coppell and Gordon Hill on the wings.

The Utd chant for Hill was Gordon Hill king of all cockneys which I thought was totally pathetic.

Hill used to terrorise defenders with his direct running and vicious shooting from outside the box.

1981 we sign him, wow, was I excited. Theres a train station near where I live also called Gordon Hill which hasnt moved from its location since it was built. GH the footballer was also a static lump of concrete

Heres another one Pascal Chimbonda

Just shows how differently people think.
The only signing in there I was remotely pleased about was Fer, who I thought might be decent.

Bare bones.

never really understood why we signed him, we already had Austin so he ended up playing wide most of the time.

Redknapp signed him and Isla cos he said he wanted to play 352, Chile played 352 at that world cup, and they were a triffic team.

He then abandoned 352 for 442 after 2 games, meaning we had a striker who couldn't really play with Austin in that system, and a wing back forced to play right back were redundant or looked useless.

With Vargas he played him wide cos he's fast innit, triifc player

Good memory. Bang on.

Granero.
He looked great. And I just wanted to be his mate.

Thought he and Faurlin were brilliant in a match against Spurs away.
We looked seriously good.
Somehow we lost, and then we just kept getting worse and worse.

The isla one made some sense but couldn't see how Vargas was going to fit in and he didn't really although his club career suggests he never really produced it very often for clubs despite being brilliant for Chile

And then spent 6 months moaning in every press conference that we didn't have a proper right back, having bombed Danny Simpson out for buttons to Leicester, where he won the Premier League.

If I remember right on Scott Sinclair, he came to us on a month's loan with the promise that afterwards he'd be playing for Chelsea in a meaningless League Cup 3rd round game against Liverpool, so he spent all his time at QPR spending as much time running away from the ball as possible to alleviate any chance of injury, and the whole exercise ended up being a big waste of everyone's time.

Probably cost us quite a lot of money though...
