Managed to attend White City Stadium only once before it was pulled down, some sort of Superstars event there with celebrities and sports stars of the time. Must've been about 1982/3 ish. Alan Wells and Roger Uttley I remember :)
My dad took me to see the Rs v Coventry we lost 3-1 it was my first game at the White City and I believe it was the Rs last game at this ground, also went to the 1966 World Cup game there Uruguay v France. If only we could have purchased that ground back then just think of the stadium we could have now, I'm not sure but I think it was owned by the Greyhound Association.
I saw Hitchin Town lose 0—1 to Walthamstow Avenue in the FA Amateur Cup Semi-Final at White City in 1961. I was absolutely distraught. Hitchin were my local team and it was the farthest they'd ever been in a major competition. There were over 10,000 there, which looked a pretty big crowd to me, but I was 11 and the only League ground I'd been too was Bramall Lane, which had three sides at the time.
I like this one. It must have seemed state of the art back then.
' A maiden of coy disposition, Met her fate at the Bush Exhibition, When his great love he told her, Placed her head on his shoulder, And enjoyed the happier position.'

White City was also the setting for one of the most famous marathon races of all time, the finish to the 1908 Olympic Games featuring the Italian Dorando Pietri:
This was the race which established the modern marathon distance as being 26 miles and 385 yards, the organisers having mapped out a 26 miles course from the start at Windsor Castle to the stadium, with the extra 385 yards added along the track so that the race would finish in front of the Royal Box.
