Hopefully the stores can be bought as a management buyout. Most of the items sold in Debenhams are not owned by Debenhams but are franchises like the old Swans shop and all the fragrances.

It is catastrophic news for towns that see Debenhams as the only department store of any worth.

This i far worse than any other retainl chain.

Apart from 12,000 job losses,a sheer landscape change on our major towns.

The days of shopping Malls and Town centre shopping are over, the boom of online shopping during Covid has seen to that.

Soon it will be only Primark left

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game

It certainly is the case in Swansea but hopefully the store could be let to management. Much of the stuff sold there arent from Debenhams. It does just show that maybe Department stores have very little future when you add this to all the other shops that have closed. I wouldnt be surprised to see House of Fraser go next.

Morning taxy.
It s a black day for the many visitors to cities who do so as Debenhams are an intergral part of the retail landscape.

Liverpool has a massive outlet in a prime spot and Chester has it all over the Rows, where all visitors go. These stores will leave a boarded up mess for years and it really is upsetting.

I'm not too sad to be getting on in years as I don't fancy the future as I see it.

Online shopping is the way things will go but I still think there is a future in small independent specialist shops. If Debenhams with its location in Swansea was converted into small units selling upmarket products I think it could revitalise the Quadrant. I think when this is over there will be people who enjoy shopping and will be happy spending a day looking around boutiques, shoe shops, interior design, delicatessens ect.

I think the future of retail is quite bleak. I have heard that the Swansea branch is one of Debenhams best performing stores and is profitable. Hopefully a way can be found either nationally or locally to keep it open under another name. Obviously there would need to be agreements set up with the various franchises plus support needed form WG. It is certainly going to be a sad day for our city and a huge hole if it does close.

It is certainly going to be a different urban landscape going forward. If the landlord can't attract a keystone retailer then the Debenhams site will have to be reconfigured for smaller units otherwise it will be boarded up. I still hold hope for this century as the city has changed its vision for the future by populating the city centre with the younger generation but even that may be under threat with the view that Chinese students may look to study at home in future as the feelings toward China change.

On Facebook is a site .So you think you now Swansea.Whatever you do,avoid it as it shows the Swansea I grew up in and it's unrecognisable now .Deeply upsetting.

The future? It looks anything but rosy ,right now.

been thru the Quadrant and seen the "this store has closed" signs, very sad, will leave a big hole in town, cant see who is going to take on a shop of that size.

I think the virus has brought forward the inevitable with online shopping by about 5 years

Yep. It was happening anyway. All Covid did was mash the accelerator down.

It's interesting that a lot of the major chains are struggling whilst smaller, more boutique businesses can still survive, which is a total reversal of the way it was for most of the 90's-00's. I can see a few of the big boys surviving if they're agile enough to make money in online sales too though.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
