Did Charlie Give Us a Lift or Did the Team Just Start To Gel At That Time? 16:50 - Apr 24 with 2255 viewsDylanP

I am curious what people think. When Charlie joined, it really looked like it was his presence that gave the whole team a link. However, looking back, it is obvious that the team has just gelled and are just playing a lot better as a team. We have looked like a great team at times over the last couple of months. So that leave open the possibility that it wasn't the Charlie joining the club that led to those better performances but just the natural progression of a team that are getting to know each other and learning each others games.

Of course, it might also be a bit of both.

What do people think?

Both IMO.

Charlie, SJ joining have us the opportunity to change the way we played. Changing the way we played allowed us to turn our season around

There was a lot of talk leading up to the window that we were playing reasonably well but needed couple of experienced players to help get some games over the line.
With SJ and Chaz we got that and the buzz from Charlie's signing definitely gave a lift. Thought the Luton game was great and gave a further bounce to the confidence.
We'd never have got to 8th without them, or similar, but equally we can't dismiss how well the squad has played as a whole.
Keeping some experience in the squad will be important to get off to a good start next season, if it was Charlie and Stefan I'd be delighted

Warburton is always very quick to talk up the effect that the loan players had. Think I remember Dickie doing the same in an interview too.

Bit of everything. Confidence was rock bottom just before they came in. They have that box of tricks that some of our younger players don't and that we see in other teams, like being able to win free kicks when under pressure or wasting time towards the end of matches. When you talk about fine margins, those kinds of things make a difference. Also Johansen has been a class passer of the ball, setting up some brilliant chances.

CA scoring those early goals took the pressure off Dykes, which allowed him to build his confidence up again and start taking more chances and playing with more freedom.

Also we had more time on the training pitch, the defence began to gel and individual players like Willock have improved. So not just one thing but a combination. But the new guys were definitely the catalyst to the other improvements.

We couldn't score a goal for love nor money in the period at the end of 2020 before Austin turned up.

Still remember that Luton game and Charlie's skill in finding the space for his goal. By and large it's been uphill since then. Without a shadow of doubt he has helped bring Lyndon along too.

If he's not here next season, I hope we've got someone equally strong lined up. Interesting that last summer's target Kieffer Moore has scored 20 league goals so, as with a lot of the recent signings, someone is making the right call.

You can't underestimate the change Austin made, we'd have gone down imo if we hadn't signed him. He bought some confidence and belief to the team and immediately raised standards around the place. He allowed the whole team to believe we could score goals so the mindset changed to stay in games rather than panic when we hadn't scored after 15 mins

Dykes has been great since the pressure was off but Austin turned this season around. We were already well on the way before Johannsen and Field arrived to take us on even further

Wow ..... so CA saved us going down to Division 1. I am sure that everyone at the Club would be voting against that view and quite rightly so.

1 - imho we were never going to be relegated
2 - it has been a massive Team/Club effort to get us where we are now
3 - there are a few individuals around the Club that have played a more important role but overall it is the Team together that has made things much better.

Completely agree a combination of factors including the switch to three at the back and sparse fixture list in January, with only three league games and an FA cup tie between the 29th December and the 1st February and then another eleven day gap between the Blackburn and Brentford victories later in that month.

This gave us the much needed time to coach the existing players, facilitate the introduction of the loan players and give them all some rest from playing matches that many desperately needed.

Austin was a game-changer for us no doubt.
Then bringing in the others showed the rest of the team that we are a good team. We created a spine of experience with SJ and the Dutchie.

By moving Barbet to the left side of the 3, this allowed Wallace to go forward more as he had the coverage behind him.

Which allows Willock or Chair to roam as they do not need to hug the left hand side for out, as Wallace will be there. As long as Wallace makes those runs all day long, which he does.

This movement down the left allows space in other areas that the forwards can exploit and also with SJ and a reducer player (Ball, Fields), means the creative ones don't always need to be tracked back as well.

Where it is weak is if we lose the ball and Wallace is out of position due to running forward, then they can do a crossfield diagnal ball to our left to start an attack. Its a known risk we take. Hence Warbs always wants us to retain the ball and pass it around a lot even if we are not probing for gaps and even if the opposition retain their shape.

As we often concede on the break, when we lose it and our out of position.

zzzzzzzzzz

Great post, also by Nix further up.

I think the change of formation alone was showing in a brief space of time that we would most likely stay up. Then Austin joined and gave us another lift, then Johansen etc etc.

But, as you say, the time on the training pitch was a crucial factor, our results under Warburton have generally been better after he and his staff have had time on the training ground to work on tactics.

Austin coming in was the catalyst, of course he hasn't done it on his own but him arriving, how he played and trained made a massive difference.

We were only heading one way before the January arrivals, couldn't score a goal and couldn't keep a clean sheet plus our best attacking threat in Bright was about to leave. We were in massive trouble which makes the second half of the season even more impressive
