Poppy shirts 12:21 - Nov 8 with 5235 viewsstowmarketrange

I just watched the game again on Sky,and I saw that we had no poppies on our shirts.Surely it’s remembrance week rather than just 1 or 2 games? And Saturday was our closest game before November 11th.
I haven’t seen the championship goals from the other games, but were we the only club not displaying them?

We got in early and wore them against forest, if I remember correctly it’s always only been one game as the shirt are auctioned off.

I appreciate that we auction them off afterwards, but were we the only championship club not wearing them? And surely a day or two longer wouldn’t have affected their auction prices much?

I’m not having a dig at the club, but I was surprised to not see them on Saturday.

Remembrance Day is the 11th - Armistice Day marking end of WW1, remembering people who have died in wars.
Remembrance Sunday is also marked each year and is the second Sunday in November.

Never heard of Remembrance Week until now. Is it new, how are people getting involved?

I do a few sessions selling poppies for our local Royal British Legion, and the launch of this years poppy appeal was on the night of the Forest game, which meant we wore them on that night, and commemorated Armistice day then. But it lasts for over 2 weeks this year,so although it isn’t officially called remembrance week, that is basically what it is now.

Nice one. Okay so Remembrance Week is the period of time that the poppy appeal is active, Makes sense so it’s as visible and effective as possible.
This means that the club committing to poppies on shirts across a number of weeks could show support more broadly for the poppy appeal rather than specifically just Remembrance Day/Sunday.

Yeah, interesting OP question. I wonder how many charitable requests the club gets over the season, must be tricky to navigate through and prioritise.

Thanks Stowmarket - and for all your support for the British Legion.

Frankly the whole poppy thing has turned into a circus in the last few years. Energy would be better spent putting proper pressure on the government to look after veterans properly rather than ramming poppy wearing down everyone's throats. Some of the tacky displays I've seen this year are ridiculous.

Does feel more complicated each year.
Any thoughts on the circus ringmasters? What’s driving this?

Can feel Clive’s eye twitching.

The Royal British Legion, and people like Stowmarket, are really lovely people doing a really lovely and useful thing.

The talking heads at GB news, and MPs, wearing poppies while discussing a ridiculous war with France and removing the £20 universal uplift from our neediest veterans not so much.

Keep up the good work Stow.

Conversation was fine. You have chosen to get upset.

Lock it if you must Clive, but note who’s chosen to get offended and who hasn’t.

Like I say, keep up the good work Stow.

Totally legitimate to point out the hypocrisy of some including my own tribe, political or otherwise. I think we are in agreement. Political exploitation of the Poppy should end.

Happy to end it there.

My local tescos had the RBL stall by the checkouts, I didn’t have any cash on me, fortunately the veteran manning the stall produced a card reader, great idea going forward and I probably donated more than I would have had I had coins in my pocket.

It is a cause that you are shamed into supporting but like any charity you need to look at the background. In 2019 it payed out $12.6m in support. It held reserves of £350.6m even after a wage bill of £57.85m. So much better to donate to small, local charities.

It’s the first time in my 7 years of collecting that we’ve had a card reader to use.It does make it easier because not everyone carries much cash any more.
We went in to Ma Kelly’s in Blackpool on Saturday night and I didn’t know it was cash only.Luckily my brother knew and had some cash with him.

I think that money you are talking about includes all the social clubs that the RBL has and not just its charity arm.

I have to quibble your numbers there.

According to their 2020 annual report, RBL hold £70m in reserves, which is good practise to hold in case of drops in income (like a pandemic) or to continue your services if some massive issue befalls the charity. The £350m number you cite is all of the fund held in the year, which includes the money they've raised which is then spent, and the value of the buildings they own - £160m

The £12.6m number is just how much they handed out in direct financial assistance - they also spent over £90m on both care services and welfare services for veterans. Disparage operational costs like salaries, if you want, but they're also the thing that raises all that cash. Local charities are important, but they can't raise money at the scale that someone like RBL can, and distribute it at the scale they can.

But most importantly, if you want to slag the work of a charity that is making a significant difference in people's lives - please be accurate

These hearts were woven of human joys and cares,
Washed marvellously with sorrow, swift to mirth.
The years had given them kindness. Dawn was theirs,
And sunset, and the colours of the earth.
These had seen movement, and heard music; known
Slumber and waking; loved; gone proudly friended;
Felt the quick stir of wonder; sat alone;
Touched flowers and furs and cheeks. All this is ended.

There are waters blown by changing winds to laughter
And lit by the rich skies, all day. And after,
Frost, with a gesture, stays the waves that dance
And wandering loveliness. He leaves a white
Unbroken glory, a gathered radiance,
A width, a shining peace, under the night.
