Local Election day in the leafy borough of Hammersmith & F, home of leading football club QPR and two others. Amazingly here at Chateau Despair we've not had a single thing from the encumbent Labour Party, no canvassers not even a single leaflet. Are they hoping for a shoo-in because of the Boris effect ? Anyone had any experiences ?

Sinn Fein taking NI is probably the most significant of all if it happens.
Sinn Fein could have the north and the republic soon. They had the largest share of the vote in the last election and were only closed out by the other two parties, traditionally adversaries, collaborating.

One thing occurred to me last night while voting - why do councillors (usually) need to be affiliated to a political party?
If people want to stand as councillors and try and do good for their local area, why does party politics have to get in the way?
In my experience of covering local councils for local papers, a committed independent can be so so valuable at that level. I've seen some ridiculous decisions passed, particularly in planning, because even at a local level councillors are getting 'whipped' by party leadership to vote for something they don't like through party politics stuff. Often vote for an indy at council elections if there's one on the paper.

We got absolutely battered with doorsteps and leaflets for this one in N20, and you can see why... Tight as a mouse's waistcoat.
Never lived in a marginal seat before, nice to know your vote actually counts for once.
Isn't it nice to have a political thread with no vitriol!
Living in a marginal is the main/only reason why my son commutes rather than move closer to Westminster. Certainly in a general election.
It does bring responsibilty when your vote counts though. Should I vote for the party I support when they stand little/no chance of winning the seat? Or should I vote against the party I don't want to win the election? It's a far easier decision when you already know whwich candidate will win!

A relative of mine is a Labour councillor in Hammersmith & Fulham. He has a full time job and young kids too but he has still been out knocking on doors a lot over the last month or so. Not been doing the face to face drop in sessions during COVID but he’s constantly talking to constituents on phone / Zoom calls. I don’t know how he does it, I think he’s barmy for doing it but he’s genuinely in it to try and help people.

No elections in Leicester yesterday, although the Leicestershire Live Facebook page posted an article saying that Labour have nominated our Mayor Peter Soulsby to stand for another term in the next mayoral election and that he'll be favourite to win.
One woman left a comment in fury declaring they were breaking electoral law for favouring a candidate on election day and they should be ashamed. It was pointed out to her, repeatedly, that there were no elections in Leicester and therefore nothing for Soulsby to win, and thus no law breaking, but she just. would. not. have. it.
It felt like the world of Facebook in a nutshell.

An independent would always get my vote (didn't have that option yesterday unfortunately).
Just not quite sure why if you're running as a councillor, you would feel the need to align with a political party. But maybe that's just me.

Well you might be that way orientated. Also it does guarantee you a big chunk of vote from the 'put a blue/red rosette on a pig and I'd vote for it' brigade.

DUP knew what was coming in the elections. A likely small majority for Nationilists. Cleverly, they Made a song and dance about the protocol which means no working assembly. So regardless of the result. There will be no assembly and no Sinn Fein first minister. The Alliance party is expected to do well which is good news. Northern Ireland deserves better than entrenched parties like Sinn Fein and the DUP.

I spoilt my ballot for the first time ever yesterday. Can't come to terms with other parties, but couldn't vote for local Labour mini Mandelsons who keep flogging off local public space to developers

One of the highlights of covering the election counts was always the spoiled papers. They have to go through them one by one in front of the candidates, the press and the observers to reach an agreement that it counts as 'spoiled'. This is because some people will put a tick, rather than a cross. Some people will vote for more than one candidate. stuff like that, so obviously one candidate will want it to be counted spoiled and the other won't.
This does, however, mean that if you write THIS BLOKE IS A BENT CNT on your slip, which lots of people do, that bloke will see it, in front of everybody, at the count.
