It's truly terrifying. Been in a grim mood and feeling like crying ever since this broke.
I'm married to an American, they grew up near Sandy Hook in CT and some of the families devastated there were known to them and my youngest brother in law was a similar age to some of them. We have family in Texas - rare voices for gun control.
There are things I like about the American education system - the academic freedom, not being stuck with four subjects from 16 but there is no way we'll ever be moving there and exposing our kids to that level of danger.
It is as sickening and incomprehensible to my American family as it is to us. These people are the minority but the electoral system in that country is just screwed beyond belief.

That’s utter nuts!
On my first visit in 1991, I got in late to my hotel one night, flicked the TV on and caught a local Los Angeles news report about a drive-by shooting into a school yard. Seemingly the school’s security team had been closing down some drug sellers and this was their response: indiscriminately firing into the school yard. Several kids injured but mercifully, no one killed.
Then at the top of the hour they went to the national news; didn’t even get a mention!
I went to Holy Cross school in Belfast in 2001 to have a look. Armoured vehicles, soldiers present to protect little kids going to school. How traumatic must it have been for them and what scars does it leave? Must be an awful stress on US kids living with that fear of wondering: are we next? |  |

Kids are desensitized and traumatized. They have lock down drills in schools. Teachers leaving the profession for so many reasons. More energy is put into protecting a fetus then a child.

Some great reactions so far from the usual 'praying for you' gang; schools should only have one entrance/exit, with armed guards at every school. They'll get to turning schools into US Embassy-type secure zones with tanks on patrol and SWAT teams on the roof before they admit that maybe it's not a good idea for civilians to have easy access to military-grade weapons and ammunition. Absolute bunch of cu nts. And you can argue that the genie is out of the bottle in terms of the difficulty of taking existing guns away from people in a country with as much of a weird relationship with guns as America, but that shouldn't stop them from trying to limit the numbers ending up in the hands of dangerous people. |  |

However, I came across a mass shooting article this morning I did read because it headlined the staggering stat that this year there have been 212 mass shootings in the USA. That's well over one a day.

If memory serves me, for it to be considered and recorded as a mass shooting, there has to be three victims. Therefore, it’s possible this list does not include incidents where shootings took place but less than three people were killed and injuries are not included. |

I'm from London but lived in Los Angeles for 15 years now.
Have a 9 and 11 year old.
They have active shooter drills and have had one lockdown due to a potential threat that was thankfully not serious in the end.
Scary thing is the kids are not fazed by the shootings and drills because its all they know. That's their upbringing and its normal to them.
This country is truly broken and divided. The politicians just hold on to power. They don't serve the people anymore. Even if a party wants to do something good the other side will block it. Fact is the Republican party has won the precidency with Trump and Bush Jnr but lost the popular vote. So they won but with less votes. 7 of the last 8 general elections the dems won more votes.
. Its the minority ruling not the majority. Electoral college saves them everytime they win.
2 senators for every state helps the minority win. L.A. has a population alone that's bigger than a lot of states. CA has 2 senators the same as North Dakota. Look at the poulation difference. System doesnt work for the majority and nothing gets through the senate anymore. Its gridlock and only something huge is gonna change that. I'm talking a civil war or a dictator. A civil war WITH a dictator is where the Republicans are heading but I don't think that will resolve the issue, only make it far far worse. With respect to Clive, as he's made it perfectly clear countless times, this is a football site not a debate room so I'll keep it short.
The only option is a third option as the two main parties have been bought by big business and organisations like the NRA. The American dream is a myth designed to stop the people from looking beyond its borders because if they did, they'd see they are not the greatest country in the world but a living experiment by corporations to see how much they can squeeze out of them before they die. When it comes to governments working for its people, the US ranks one of the lowest in the world with sub par national healthcare, minimum wages, workers rights and social benefits. Is there any other country on the planet that bigs itself up to be the greatest in the world but can't, sorry won't, provide the basics for its citizens? If it wasn't true it would be funny but in the end you just feel sorry for the people who don't know any different.
Al Murray as the pub landlord described the US as "a good idea that's got out of hand" which pretty much sums it up for me. Voting in a third option and outlawing corporate donations is the only way to get rid of the corruption rife in US politics but it will never happen as the corporations won't let it and neither will the corrupt politicians. If the Trump crazies replace the old school Republicans in the mid terms, that's it for free and fair elections and that's it for democracy in the US. I just hope Europe holds together as they will be the only super power left that can stand up the dictators in charge of Russia, China and the US. With climate change, failing antibiotics, pollution that is altering every living thing and a much more deadlier virus just around the corner, thank fck I'm old and won't be around for the worst of it but my kids, Christ, the things they'll see. Fair post Bazz its asking a lot to take a life unless its your children under threat with an armed intruder inside your own house .Hopefully none of us have ever to face that choice .
It looks like the shooter faced no obstacles entering the school but why did police not force their way in to the classroom and eliminate him.I realize its all useless speculation but there was a couple of children found alive in that room after 1 hour and he was neutralized .How sickening is the thought many more could have been saved .RIP little ones | | | |

I’ve lived, worked and travelled a lot in the US and been exposed to much of its extremes as well. I’ve seen the good, the bad and downright ugly of the place and long since concluded: it’s not only the author of its misfortunes, but thickness and ignorance are so ingrained that’s it’s beyond repair.
I think America was a wonderful idea, but somewhere along the way they lost sight of it and frankly, it needs to be allowed to break before it can be fixed.
