Oooooh they are nice. Didn’t have them in the Northolt Tandoori or whatever it was called when I was a lad.

Had to go to South Harrow or Sudbury Hill for a curry back in my youth, then turn out for Sunday league football, bit of challenge that after a skinfull and a madras.

I’ve just remembered that it was The Empress of India in Northolt. We’d often end up in the curry house opposite the scout hut in South Harrow or the posh one on the Hill. Always good. Also the restaurant almost opposite to Oscars where we went for the world popadum record (50). First ever curry: The Strand Tandoori. Bloody life changing. I was about 22 at the time. My kids were eating them before they were 10.

| pizza or curry. on 19:32 - Jul 21 with 1606 views | LimehouseR | Sticking with the Harrow theme... The Kingsfield Arms at the bottom of the Hill which looks like a pub from the outside but is actually an amazing curry house is extremely tasty and good options if you are veggie or vegan (they have a separate menu if you ask). A little bit expensive maybe but you get what you pay for. You get the option on each dish of mild, medium or hot. They do not mess about if you ask for the latter. Good pizza in Harrow is hard to come by unless anyone knows somewhere :) | | | |

A variation on the mild, medium or hot, I went for a curry in Copenhagen once and the spice level options were Danish, English or Indian!

Trying rack my brains for the curry house name over the road from the Oldfield Tavern (Oscars) that you got popadoms, remember going in there regularly for just plain nan bread on way back from the Black Horse if we had no cash. Mel will probably remember name of the restaurant. Was the South Harrow one, the Curry Mahal on the Northolt Road, lived quite near there in Northolt Park. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| pizza or curry. on 20:04 - Jul 21 with 1570 views | EmpireStateRanger | I'll add to this by saying that curry would be more popular if it was as prevalent here in NYC as it is in London/England. Indian is kind of viewed as a takeout standby here but not much more than that. The Indian food in London crushes the stuff you would find in New York. | | | |

I spent years teasing out acceptable curries in NYC! The Bhatti Grill on Lexington (and 27th-ish) was always good for a slightly fancier experience - though it was BYOB for years and still let you away with it even after they got a license. Sapid in Prospect Heights (Washington Av) was our local - also BYOB and often quite dead if you ate in, which I generally preferred to having to listen to a chorus of hipsters. Always found it decent in its own idiosyncratic way. Jersey City has quite a high standard because there are so many Indian people living in the new builds around Exchange Place etc I'm sure there's at least a couple more I'm blanking on. Oh and former pub one at the bottom of the hill in Harrow is good yeah. [Post edited 21 Jul 2022 20:16]

Not eaten at the Curry Mahal for many years but I always thought it was the best for miles.

We're in Crown Heights (Franklin Ave) so I have to give Sapid a shot! Our spot, Pearl, has gone downhill. Think the point is even the pubs in London have decent Indian fare, so you can't go far without having access to acceptable curry, which is like finding good pizza in New York.

stayed in the skyline hotel in manhatten a few years ago, across the road was a pizza joint called fat sals.....rough old place, but the slice of pizza was the size of a whole large pizza over here, and tasty. hells kitchen, 9th avenue, 49th street, i think.

Yeah worth giving Sapid a go - but just as a disclaimer I haven't been there since we left at the end of 2016 :) We couldn't sort out fitting both it in and The Islands when we were over at Xmas.

No mate, it was across the road. Can’t remember the name. The name of the one across from Oscars is bugging me. Edit: Tikka Centre? [Post edited 23 Jul 2022 8:11]

If anyone is near Rickmansworth try the white bear pub near the aquadrome , best curry by far in this neck of the woods . Bought myself a pizza oven last year (Ooni gas) takes some getting used to but being able to cook ur own pizza in under 2 mins is well worth it ,

Cheese on toast with brinjal (aubergine) pickle is a bridge between the two universes of pizza and curry.

When asked at a restaurant if he’d like his pizza sliced into 4 or 8 he replied 4 as he wouldn’t manage 8 slices.

I found the best way to discover a good Indian restaurant was made easier if British Airways landed at your local airport. I can assure you the crew knows exactly where to go.
