In defense of Kakay 18:30 - Sep 17 with 2930 viewsWilkinswatercarrier

I'll admit I'm not the biggest fan of Kakay, but reading some comments on other threads i think he is being made a scapegoat by some on here rather than looking at the real problem.
I said several weeks ago (Cardiff away) that Smyth was going to get targeted and yesterday he was.
All the Sunderland goals came down our right, and Smyth was definitely at fault for a couple them. His positioning is woeful which is causing Kakay all sorts of problems, and he looks out of his depth playing as RWB.
It reminds me of when Manning played for us and Barbet was getting abuse, yet it was Mannings positioning that was the cause.

Once Dunne is back I wouldn't be surprised if Smyth is moved so that Kakay moves to RWB. I'm surprising myself by saying that!

We need to get Smyth in somewhere for his pace.

It's being so happy that keeps me going.

Weird post - so Kakay is to be permanently installed (as RWB) in a position you tell us he's struggling in? Am I missing something?

As I tw*tted on X in response to Ian McCullough's spatette with a grumpy Steve Cook, a big problem was the lack of an outball/service to SIncs after the red card, and when he was senselessly subbed off for Dykes on the hour, we were clearly banjaxed. At the same time, I agree that our right side continues to look vulnerable, as Ossie is pretty good at attacking, but not so nous-ful when it comes to being a defender.

I’ll be honest, yesterday wasn’t the game to be judging anyone’s performance… kakay/smyth or anyone else. When you’re down to 10 men and the right side of defence is up against Clark, Ba and Bellingham; you’re going to struggle…

…I find it bemusing.

What I will say is that I felt Kakay, albeit *exposed* defensively; remained committed and caused them problems goi g forward once or twice. Credit to him.

Never said Kakay was struggling as a RWB. It's Smyth, he is causing the problems for Kakay.

Sorry, mate, my misreading. Smyth is a winger, and needs to be played as such - otherwise it's round pegs in square holes. I like Kakay, who is a great (counter-)attacking outlet for us, but we need to sort that defensive side.

Every formation has its flaws. Ours is we’re going to allow more space down the right as Smyth plays higher than Paal. Kakay is improving IMO and is showing he’s capable in that RCB role which I don’t think any of our other defenders including Dunne would look comfortable in. Also probably our best wide threat when played at RB albeit with the game basically over.

I have to say, the last 30 minutes or so I thought he was excellent going forward, he was consistently beating his man and getting good crosses in (Kolli perhaps should've put one of them away just before the end). His defensive positioning is still very suspect but prior to today him and Smyth have been very effective as a duo down the right.

In an ideal world, we'd have an extra option in that RCB role because, as it stands, if either Smyth or Kakay come off we have to change our shape down the right completely.

Worse than that- we bring Adomah on.

Agreed - before yesterday and until we went to 10 men they played well as a pairing.

Round pegs will fit in square holes.

He's definitely improving, and has played well recently, but on Saturday before we went to four at the back and especially after Clarke was the best player on the pitch and some of that was down to Kakay. A tough day, for obvious reasons.

There's a bizarre irony in the title of this thread.

I think he suffers the same concentration affliction that Dozzell has in certain matches, although Dozzell feels a lot more on it. If he can concentrate and read the game a bit better he will improve.

Never knowingly right.

Thats why Gareth may have to look in the free agent market for a RB/RCB.

Ryan Nyambe would be a good fit as he can also operate as a CB and play on the right as well.

Hes also 25 as well, so would allow Drewe to go out on loan.

I don't think Kakay is being made a scapegoat. Sure, he has his limitations but most appreciate his endeavour and attitude. As for Saturday, the red card changed the game, nothing more to say.

So is Kakay the new "DOF" now?

He's average at best. Would probably be a better winger as he can cross pretty well.

Having Smyth with him doesn't help though.

Smyth is an advanced forward running winger. No real blame for not being great covering RB.

Never knowingly right.
