Cricket world cup (non QPR) 09:24 - Oct 5 with 21631 viewsGaryBannister86

Can't believe it's 4 years since one of the best sporting days of my life....

Would be great to win it in India, tough ask I feel.

Sad to see such a small crowd for the opener. I know the ground holds 132,000 but that is pathetic. India cricket fans can be so one-eyed sometimes. Why not turn up to see some great players on show?

Come on the Umpires the 2 least likeable teams in the Final 2 worst balls have got the 2 wickets for India think the game is set up for Smith to grind out a winning score for the Aussies

Well played the Aussies. Caps a great year for Cummins. Won't see many of them at the next ODI World Cup though and same goes for England.

Winning in a Final in silence cos the home fans have taken their pram home is objectively very funny

The English media and fans obsession w the silence of the Indian crowd is genuinely bizarre. India got smashed. Why would their fans be cheering wildly while they were getting pummelled by a 160 run partnership?

Most of the fans don’t drink when they go to the matches…. It’s different than England or Australia where half the fans are so drunk they don’t even know what’s going on in the game

Most of the fans also clapped heads century and stuck around.:: there were loads of Indian fans clapping the Indian players as they walked off the pitch….

There’s a weird contingent of English fan who is bizarrely preoccupied w what india, it’s fans and the bcci do…. It tends to be more of a reflection of the insularity of the fan

They most certainly don't drink in Ahmedabad it's a dry state as for the game didn't really want either team to win being an English cricket fan cheering on the Aussies would just be plain wrong and for me Kohli is just too one eyed and lacking in grace

Elements of truth here, although I maintain India fans are irritatingly overboard in their hero-worship of individuals above the team, causing divisive characters such as Kohli who by many accounts is actually a decent bloke but has to live and perform a very strange and pressurised life.

No time for the Aussies of course, but for sheer will and competitiveness to win that match (and basically look like doing so from start to finish) took absolute balls of steel. Grudging admiration. Never for Warner and Smith of course, but definitely for Cummins, Starc and Head. Incredible performance.

fancied Australia to win yesterday, wish I'd put some money on them, they were by far the better side

Whole tournament needs a revamp though, not enough knockout games and goes on for far too long

Bang on, but the ICC will never risk there being a competition where the Big 3 don't play each other at least once, or India v Pakistan, so that will never happen.

It needs more countries and fewer games - I want to see Nepal, Namibia, Papa New Guinea, Scotland, Ireland, West Indies....it's a world cup. Give it more jeopardy like the football world cup with more groups, but smaller. As long as the pitches are flat, the risk of the big countries going out early due to bad luck and conditions should be fine, and why not give the smaller countries a chance anyway with a good toss to win?

I dont think Heads ton was clapped, it was stony silence. In England, century's are always clapped, begrudgingly sometimes.

as others have said, the indian fan base (particulary on social media) is toxic. Got tired of seeing their fans post vitriol on every single FB or twitter post about the Ashes.

i fancied them too... lightning rarely strikes twice in tournaments when teams play eachother again.

just watch some IPL team massively over pay for Travis head in the IPL.

Cam Green must be one of the luckiest aussies going. has won a T20 WC, ODI WC, WTC and part of an ashes retaining side without really contributing.

good for you. you really got me there!

at the end of the day, though, you're the one whose extracting happiness out of other peoples disappointment and antagonising other qpr fans for no reason.... i think that probably says more about the kind of person you are

lot of research out there about the inverse correlation b/w schadenfreude and self esteem

indians want their team to win as much as other fans do (if not more, at least in the context of cricket). there is an element of hero worship towards athletes that you dont get in, for instance, england. thats largely b/c many indian people live really hard lives and the society is highly aspirational and upwardly mobile, so they look up to their heros.... so many bollywood films are premised around a guy from a poor background/a small village becoming successful, being the hero, marryign the beautiful woman etc....

in that respect, its similar to the US, which is also a highly aspirational society

thats in contrast to england, which is a highly class conscious society where kids get bullied b/c their parents sent them to boarding school or where tall poppy syndrome plays out in the media all the time or where you get shows like downton abbey which are largely about how miserable very wealthy people are

its just a different culture

im sure pakistani fans would find it quite odd to watch adults dressing up in costumes and drinking themselves into a stupor at edgbaston.... or west indians fans would find it odd that adult males wear suit jackets and the same tie at lords to signify their status

Of course it is a different culture. I hate the English way of slagging off our greats in all sports, when other countries would have statues and god knows what else. Until, of course, they die when suddenly all their previous achievements and character are multiplied by a 1,000.

I do think your post contains a quite biblical amount of sweeping generalisations though, so fair play to you for that.
