Swiss - Wheel of Time Season 2 22:18 - Dec 4 with 3407 viewsdavman

Getting back into Wheel of Time on Prime now it is at season 2. Pretty good to be fair. I seem to remember you had read the books - how well are they keeping to the story?

Can we go out yet?
Poll: What would you take for Willock if a bid comes this month?

It's great isn't it - really enjoying it.

It has been a long time since I read the books and my memory is not the best - but I think they're doing a decent job of bringing the 700 page books to life!

I have discovered I am a fan of Priyanka Bose!

Does it get better then?

I thought series one was ok got 1.5 episodes into series 2 and thought the script and acting were really bad (as mentioned on the TV thread).

I read the first 7/8 books many years ago so cannot remember 98% of the plot.

in two minds.

I can understand how the series is fun for those that haven't read the books, but for those of us that have, I find the wokifying of the production extremely frustrating as it really does change the scope of the character development from what happens in the books.

Some of the major problems I have are:
Number 1) They've made Rand look like a wet fart. He wield huge power, and performs monumentous acts which in the TV series they spread out amongst the girls. I can understand this, in terms of letting the audience understand the scope of Nyneave and Egqene's power, but this then undermines Rand, when Nyneave's and Egwene's power(political and magical) develop gradually over time and come to the fore in the second half of the series. Neither Nyneave nor Egwene would have been able to link at the end of the first series .. they just didn't have the knowledge or experience.
Initial characterisation of Matt Cauthon as a thief and a coward are so far from the mark. Rogue, charmer, reluctant hero, gambler absolutely .. but thief and coward definitely not.

They cut Rand's initial meeting with Elayne in Caemlynn .. where he also meets Morgaise(Elayne's mother and queen of Andor) .. this is a significant introduction to other major support characters characters.

Min is NOT a dark friend in the books.

and the list goes on.

On the other hand, I can understand why they've done what they've done in terms of changes to the story and the characters as to stick to the books would have resulted in huge increases in the budget due to the need to retain cast members for longer, increased costs of CGI and multiple sets etc.

One way to ascend above the very annoying changes, is to imagine this is just another alternate pattern in the Wheel, and so will have subtle differences. In that the events start several years after the events in the book ( TV series main characters are 5 years older than in the books).

I cannot recommend enough the whole Audiobook series. It is the amongst the best I've every listened too .. and at 500hours in total, will take most people the best part of the year. Whilst it can be a little drawn out in places, the depth of description and characterisation really make it an engrossing experience, and any attempt to dramatize is never going to fully please those of us who fell in love with the books.

Cheers, matey - all interesting to someone like me who has not read the books. Not unexpected "licence" for TV Adaptations though; really, really difficult to stick religiously to the books.

The Audio Book would be tempting if I was still on the road as much as I used to be, but the thought of finding 500 hours scares me rigid!

How far through the books do you think they are now?

Metallica, yes, give it another go; it was a slow burner for me, but the finale to season 2 left me wanting a bit more, which is a good sign.

Well the major events are up to the end of book two, but they've mashed in some things.

For example Aviendha first appears late in book three, and was met by Egwene, Elayne, and Nynaeve, and isn't released from a cage by Perrin ( in book 3 Perrin releases a completely different character), so her appearance has been brought forward.

Once you get to the middle books, there's room for a bit more mashing as some of then are very 'slow' - more descriptive rather than eventful. For example Perrin doesn't appear in book 5 at all, as the Point of Views disperse more, and he gets major attention in events in other books, but that won't work for a TV series.

But without knowing what they're doing in season 3 its difficult to know exactly whether some of what they did in season 2 is a mashup of something else in later books, or just a deviation.

I think the best thing is to enjoy the TV series for what they are, and to avoid comparison to the books. They're capturing enough of the source material to make it good, without butchering completely as Netflix have done with the Witcher. My problem is I am comparing all the time which has reduced my enjoyment.

Given that swiss' "requirements" seem to revolve around the accurate portrayal of characters in a TV adaptation of a 14 book fantasy series, I must congratulate you on the breadth of service you seem to be willing to offer. I hope your budget is larger than Amazons.

Cheers, I'll give it another whirl after I've finished 'Joe Pickett' (very good so far)

The books are very much like this. Slowly setting them up for the momentous finale.

I also got stuck half way through series 2. I have been meaning to finish it but there are some decent shows on at the moment and only so much time to watch telly.
