One of the problems with this type of thing is you can't really compare players across time. Take Ivan Golac. He was a decent player, a fans favourite and did well for Saints. But, as a player he wasn't a patch on KWP or Clyne for that matter. If he was available today, he might be behind Bree in the pecking order.
Also, not a popular view, but I reckon that by the time he'd developed, Tim Flowers was doing a better job for Saints than Shilton did. | | | |

Yeah it's funny how often the players that make it aren't the "best" players, i used to play football with Lukas Jutkiewicz as he grew up near me (his sister was in the same year at school with the sister of one of my best mates).
He was definitely not the most naturally gifted or "best" player out of our group, but he was definitely the most serious about playing and hardest working.
The best player i played with never got further than playing for Totton occasionally as he enjoyed going on out on the piss more than training | | | |

What this thread has pointed out is just how many great players we have had and it is hard to compare them, Golac played 167 League games for Saints, Nathaniel Clyne played just under half that with 89, Golac was a very good right back for Saints.
Not sure I can agree with you about Flowers, Shilton was the undisputed best goalkeeper not only in England but the World during his time at the Dell, but he was only about 3rd/4th choice for England at best
