to my memory, they were always a local derby , people say police have a say but us away at swansea when we could have had watford, millwall, oxford or luton?
for years it was chelsea at home , then norwich then local of locals plymouth away.

We seem to have been hit particularly hard this year with the most western team quickly followed by one of the most easterly ones.
Not much time for the players or the fans to recover.Although it’s only 25 minutes on the train for me on Sunday.
It wouldn’t have been too bad if it had been Norwich and then Swansea because of the lack of trains on Boxing Day. [Post edited 27 Dec 16:59]

I do remember moaning about this in a pub on the Plymouth Barbican one Boxing Day until a local pointed out that bar Bristol City and Reading we were their local game!
Our fixtures versus, say, Watford's fixtures do seem to be particularly cruel this Christmas.

Sheff Utd - Burnley (A), West Brom (H), Sunland (A)

After last winning away on Boxing Day at Plymouth sometime after the invention of the printing press and before man landed on the moon … to be exact 1967 - our next fixture away from London on the 26th December wasn’t for 15 years. We had 8 games at home, 2 away trips to Millwall and Spurs, 4 years where there wasn’t a Boxing Day game and then in 1983 we went up to Leicester. That can’t be a coincidence there must have someone doing the fixtures who had a soft spot for us.

I didn’t think of that angle - but wouldn’t that mean we’d be more likely to have a Boxing Day fixture at home if we weren’t having one on August Bank Holiday.
It could be worse tho - we used to play fixtures on Xmas Day - and we never won any of those either.
Played 5 between the end of WW2 and 1957. 4 of them were away - Blackburn, Barnsley, Gillingham, and Selhurst Park! I mean just imagine. Or perhaps better not to.
Edit: I think there should be a call out for anyone who saw QPR play on Christmas Day - as well as the trips above there was a home (defeat naturally) to Preston in 1950. If someone can be found who went to any of these the club should present them with a bottle of Sherry and induct them immediately into the Forever Rs club. [Post edited 27 Dec 17:55]

I don't know. It's probably bolox.
I remember the 2003/04 promotion season our Bank Holiday games were all away, and all finished 3-3 (Rushden in August, Notts Co on Boxing Day, Barnsley Easter Monday).

In a serious country you’d have Cardiff v Swansea and Bristol City v Plymouth or at least some combination of those four but we can’t trust football fans apparently. It’s like they’ve purposely made southern teams travel as far as possible on Boxing Day. All those Prem London teams and you get Bournemouth v Palace, Brighton v Brentford and Southampton v West Ham. Oh and Arsenal v Ipswich. Newcastle v Villa ffs. Forest v Spurs. I’m sure it’s deliberate from a police request.
Coventry v Plymouth ffs.
I still fancy us against Watford even if we lose on Sunday because they’re soft as anything away on a bad day but it’s a big advantage to have no travel over such a quick run of games. [Post edited 27 Dec 18:43]

The logic is that clubs are at home on Boxing Day or New Years Day, therefore one set of clubs has to have two away games over the period. We do seem to play Swansea, Cardiff or Plymouth over the festive season more than we should though!

I was going to ask the same thing.
It is really strange that we have gone from one end of the country to the other over the festive period. Great to have Watford who are nearby on new years day, but surely we should have all the festive games within easy travelling distance for all fans concerned. Is it some sort of dislike for our wonderful football club from the authorities at Lancaster gate or am i paranoid? | | | |

That does make sense, I guess, with the lack of public transport making things difficult for travelling fans on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. A very rare example of some consideration being given to match going fans. | | | |

some interesting thoughts, i mean before i was born we had div 3 south and north, so that pretty much kept many games local .
there can always be trouble but it has improved and there are endless marches thru london and sometines it kicks off but police don't ban them,

There were only two away wins in both the Championship and Premier League, and one of those was Fulham winning at Chelsea on Boxing Day, so hardly going out of their way in terms of travel.
It seems most away sides didn't fancy it on Thursday and weren't up for the games. The R's, Plymouth and Wednesday had terrible first half's as if they hadn't turned up.
Rather than playing Oxford a few weeks ago, it would have made more sense if we played Oxford on Thursday which is only about 63 miles from Paddington. Plymouth should have been given Bristol City rather than going to Coventry but what do I know? [Post edited 28 Dec 19:41]
