Any partakers?

Tried to get into this last year, and made it as late as the end of October. Made it a NY's resolution to get in before February but my bottle has gone.

Any tips?

Fully intended to make this part of my regime when I moved to Lowestoft but the quality of the water at the moment is preventing it happening.
I am partaking in the Christmas Day swim for charity this coming Xmas though.
Whilst on holiday in Cornwall last summer I went in the lido at Hayle, due to high winds they hadn’t covered it overnight, I dived straight in and immediately turned into Jack from the Titanic!

favourite cheese mature Cheddar. FFS there is no such thing as the EPL

Went to Parliament Hill Lido this week, water was 3 degrees - the swim was horrific but felt amazing afterwards.
My tip would be to wear waterproof gloves!

Class mate. I planned to do a NYD dip but was stormy as fck.

On water quality, I can’t recommend this app enough.

Cheers. A woman I used to work with uses that Lido all the time. Did you watch that Netflix documentary?

Got the gloves, and as my nearest beach is shingle got some shoes too. Can’t get on with a wetsuit so was going in just with trunks.

A wetsuit will really help, especially for the colder months and it will make it more bearable for the first few swims. You can ditch it Mar - Nov.

Our local gym has a ice pool and it took me a few goes to get from 30sec and now up to 4mins. Get your breathing right with big deep breadths.

From May til September, when I walk the dog on pretty much deserted beaches, I go in when the mood takes me, a great feeling.
I recommend the wonderful documentary 'my octopus teacher', got me back into swimming in the sea.
One of my lads, who has boxed, had professional Thai boxing bouts and is now an instructor, swims in all weather, but he's like that. He recommended the doc to me.
I give consideration where to swim, as we still pump untreated sewerage into the sea. In 2025.

My Octopus Teacher is remarkable and hugely moving. I saw Craig Foster, the man the film is about, interviewed last year and that was pretty special too.

Filmed in balmy South Africa though not Lowestoft or the Isle Of Man 🥶

Was in the sea in San Sebastian at the end of November. Beautiful. Was in the sea at Clonea Strand, Co. Waterford last Wednesday. Also beautiful but wooh fresh. I can mostly handle the cold water but me nads are no so keen. I usually go for a run along the beach first then I’m ready for the briny. Love it.

Love the sea but , the med for me and not a freezing cold North Sea.
Fair play to anyone who does it but can’t get my head why anyone would deliberately get freezing cold.
Strandhill in Sligo or Salthill in Galway hold bad memories for me but it was an Irish summer.

Off parts of the IoM, it would be a big brown shark coming for the octopus.
A pod of dolphins seems to have moved in though, I saw them a couple of times last year, once close up from a lonely cove. Brilliant.
Worked alongside a bloke who is now a pro diver (freeing boat propellers from fish nets, etc), he has filmed octopus off the island, and also says he knows a couple of divers who have come across thresher sharks further out. Not supposed to be there, but still.

You're all bloody mad.

Just back from a walk alongside the Severn, which isn't even the sea, while wearing a big coat and a jumper, and it was already plenty cold enough.

I asked a retired Doctor friend about this only a few weeks ago. She said that people do this to get a dopamine hit from the sudden rush and exhilaration of the warmish to freezing cold, so they think they feel better and healthier. In reality, it's the dopamine hit released by the body to cope with the impact of the sudden temperature change on it.

And people like to return to their dopamine hits even if it hurts them, don't they?

She also said that while that could help some people (like destress the mind and useful quick, happiness fix), it's only a temporary effect at best and in the main, it's very risky to your health as you could get hypothermia, which is the most likely thing to happen rather than any real health benefits.

Which is doctor talk, so don't do it as it's stupid.

zzzzzzzzzz

I wonder if you asked her about anything else;

Sex? Don’t do it. Fcuking is bad for you. You could catch the clap or get a bad back.

Eating? Overrated. Can lead to indigestion.

Life? Don’t get carried away - it’s only temporary.

Ah she’s a doctor (retired) and you only spoke to her two weeks ago. She knows best 😁
