Sheffield United Reflection 18:02 - Mar 1 with 6090 viewsbluenwhite10

Poor 1st goal to concede as the ball into the box had no real pace on and 2 defenders did not deal with or neither did the keeper come out and claim it. Morgan although a wonderful talent looked off it and I would say after 30mins he needed to be replaced by Saito with Chair going more central, that change was done but in my opinion too late. The second goal should have been dealt by Edwards earlier but it was a quality finish by Campbell. I thought we gave it a good go but just fell short, but United where a very good side packed with lots of quality attacking players and a 10 million player on the bench (Cannon) and let’s not forget Moore too.

So fallen just short I suppose against a team like that with us in the bottom half of budgets in the championship is I guess no reason to be to disheartened.

Cook looks a little off it maybe Morrison needs to come in.

One player i thought was outstanding Varanne.

No complaints today and gave it go against possibly the best side I have seen at HQ this season.

Final word officials very poor today the linesman in the 1st half missed a couple of offsides and in the second half balls going out of player and the referee was generally poor too. Lots of tough games ahead in the coming weeks so a call for patience with this young squad.

Pretty much as I saw it as well…we just seem to lack that final third incision that good teams like SHEFFU have.

Thought Yang was OK but I’m expecting more from him I think…maybe my fault for believing the Spurs hype. Koki was great when he came on and that salmon leap near the end was magnificent…if that went in that would have been goal of the season contender.

Thanks for the just backs…always look forward to your posts after games!

Yes, pretty much the way I saw it too, although I'd say the first goal was very poor and since it was always going to be hard for us to score one or two, the first goal was also very important.

I agree about Varane and Cook. I'm a bit worried about Cook. He's looking a bit off it. We kind of need JCS or Morrison to step up to that role and stake a place as our starting no. 5 next season.

Cook is finished. First 5 minutes he had a 5 yard head start on one their players and the bloke breezed past him.
Never the quickest, the injury has robbed him of a yard of pace. He struggled all afternoon and has since coming back.

Morrison should be brought in ASAP.

Agree about their goals. Except I don't think Cook was particularly at fault for either. Dunne and Paal should have done better with the cross for the first and Yang should have got rid of the ball earlier. For the second I thought it was Colback who was nearer and should have closed him down.

I think we should have made more of the chances we created at the other end.

Having said that it was a decent effort against a top two side and we almost certainly deserved a point. The ref was poor again and did his best for them.

Thought we competed well . They had two on target and scored both .
Economic football from a team with Canon ,Diaz, o Hare with kiefer moore nowhere to be seen .
Brewster 20 million , Campbell . We’re pissing against the wind here.
None of them good enough to compete at premier league level, may I add.
Paal , Varane and Saito played very well .
Morgan well off today sadly . He’ll be back .

1st goal was down to Yang losing the ball on the touch line. Delayed laying it of or just sending down the channel.

Smells like a trout farm in here

We do our best but against decent sides it’s not quite good enough.

Wasn’t a lot in it, but when it mattered they just did everything quicker. We seem to be regressing back to our early season default mode of two touch football.

I agree Morrison should come back in but Cook is far from finished. The foot injury he had is a killer one and it takes a long time (I've had the same injury and it did me for 4 months). I think he needs a rest and possibly build up strength again. I feel he has come back too soon but he's far from finished. That said, as you say I would bring Morrison in.

Never knowingly right.

Frey's an easy guy to like, and he took his penalty really well. But the past two games his hold up play has looked really poor. In fact their second goal originates from Frey losing a ball in to him after a heavy touch. It's definitely an area we're struggling with at the moment.

Frey is the only option to start really, while Kolli is out. I thought he did quite well first half on his own up there. He won quite a few headers and brought others into the game well. I thought we did well until he tired.

I'm a little more critical of the overall performance than others on here. First, we didn't move the ball quickly enough back to front, but that's been a problem for much of this season. Secondly, when we go long, the ball either pings off Frey or there isn't a player close enough to him to challenge for the second ball. Thirdly, the lack of a clinical finish was very evident today.

That said, we did give it a go but sadly weren't good enough on the day.

Sheffield United Reflection on 22:03 - Mar 1 with 2527 viewsnumptydumpty

Was happy with the performance.

Second half we were more in control and perhaps at least a draw would have been deserved.

The non pass from Morgan at the end of the first half. The non goal in first half for Frey and their player who avoided a second yellow when a red should have been issued.

Was a decent showing and on another day the result could easily have been reversed.

I can only think Yang is here next season as it was a strange signing and in particular now with so many coming back to fitness.

Smyth and Saito made a big difference and I think it was seen that Chair and not Morgan needs to be in the middle as a ten.

Varane was very prominent and was very effective in the role he had today.

Thought Dembele had a couple of decent runs at goal too, in the short time he was on the pitch.

Cook seems to be slowing up and was not as he normally can be. Wasn't Nardi's better days.

But definitely promise and now with nothing left in the season ie we not going to be going up or down - time to try out potential future line ups.

Depressing to see the lack of improvement this season. Still slow as f*** to break; Dunne being our most creative player says it all. Is Marti really all that? Got to say seeing Fat Frank take Coventry into the play-offs and you do start to wonder. Big summer ahead. Think most of that team won't be here next season. I just hope we get some quick players in - Nourry said that we're going for younger players and one hopes we will have more like Koki going forward.

That's pretty much how I saw it.

This game was very much par for the course and where we're at. Utd were clearly the better team, as they should be having hoovered up a good chunk of the division's talent. We lost the ball and got caught in the transition twice, and we're starting to make a habit of it. We're too slow in getting players up in support and when we do get chances usually miss the shot.

We did give it a good go after they surprisingly elected to declare at 2 and shithouse it but it was definitely much more hope than expectation that we'd get an equaliser.

I must be alone here but I thought we dominated the game! They didn’t have a single spell of pressure the entire game but scored 2 goals out of nothing. The first was a straight forward diagonal to the far post that should have been picked off and the second was just one of those thumpers that could go row x but went top corner! Other than those flashes, we were in charge but lacked the skill/ ruthlessness to exploit it. Went up a gear after the subs but crowded out. They have been top 3 all season and we matched them and more,

Thought we looked okay when we actually needed to be exceptional to get anything out of the game against a sheff utd team who were in about 3rd gear for most of the game which was just about enough to get them through it. Ref bottled it on choudhury who was on a yellow early on and should've had a 2nd one either for time wasting or a stupid foul in the 2nd half. Lino wasn't great but he didn't deserve a lighter/object thrown at him in the 2nd half.

We weren't OK mainly because Blades were able to run out a phalanx of subs that would be nailed on starters for almost any other club in this division. We, OTOH, had a raw teenager and a career second level journeyman.*

We did OK given those squad limitations, but to match a team like that man-for-man you need a bit of luck and "the run of the ball."

*I love Smyth but let's face it that's what he is.

Cook is in no way finished but is clearly still feeling the injury

When he went off he sat next to the bench with his foot planted on top of an ice pack

Agree Morrison should be playing more and Cook eased in.

Marti wants 54 points ASAP as do I
The play off talk was bonkers.
We still need three wins and a draw

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

He is 34 in April and will be a free agent by June. He'll be released.
As soon as we are mathematical safe the team should be picked with an eye on next season.

I keep saying it, but we have got a big rebuilding job come the summer, and is probably our most important.
My son and I were chatting on the way home yesterday and agreed that Marti has done as much with this group of players as he can. I wouldn't be surprised if he walks in the summer.

Not sure if dominated is too strong a word but we were certainly the better side, not sure we can have too many many complaints with a performance like that against a side full of quality, any of their 5 strikers starts ahead of Frey. Play like that every week and we will do well in this division, get a quality Striker in we do very well.

I'm not sure why this summer would see a bigger churn of players. I think 5 to 6 incoming transfers would be about right, and so fewer than last summer.

That would be an odd move - to put in 18 months of graft and then, just when you’re set to push for a top 8 finish with a bit of further player trading, to go?.. maybe summer 2026 if we don’t push into the playoffs next season but probably not this summer.

We need Spurs to buy Eze and somehow move Madsen and Celar on whilst recouping some of the money we wasted on buying them.

It’s also looking like we will lose Dunne, Cook, Paal, and Edwards from our current back line.

Recruitment will be needed and it needs to be bang on. Get it right and we could kick on. Get it wrong and we could backslide.

It will be a hugely important summer window that will define our trajectory for next season.

I’m as frustrated as you are especially with Fat Franks endeavours at Coventry . Their net spend was 17 million this season and it’s bearing fruit . Our main outlay was on a now injured striker and Madsen . Says it all . It late November I would have taken this all day long .
