I think, if you look back over the last few seasons, when they have been falling down the leagues, their crowds have heldup remarkably well.
When I was working in Bradford, I went, one Tuesday night, to see them play Coventry in L1. I seem to remember a sizeable crowd, even then. |  |

This is what Tango man got so absolutely wrong at QPR and from someone who's background was in retail (Benetton) where the customer is supposedly king.
Trying to create a high priced elite boutique club was just nuts, totally the wrong club for it. Maybe they thought we were 'little Chelsea' and if so, clearly did not have a clue about so many things in that respect.
'Bums on seats' - absolute priority. Have a full stadium paying £20 a ticket and as well as a great atmosphere etc, you have people buying food & drink, programmes, merchandise etc.
It really is a no-brainer but people like Tango & Cash just cannot and never will see it. |  | | |

I think he was basing his thinking on F1 where he ran the Benetton team (very successfully) for years.
But that's a completely different sport. There are plenty of people willing to throw tens of thousands at a "boutique experience" for that sort of thing. |  |

Sorry mate, it doesn't work like that. If we got 18000 in paying £20, income is £360k + additional spending on catering, etc. If you get 16000 paying £30, it's £480k.
Then the boxes don't pay £30 but closer to £100 per person.
No wonder so many clubs try to attract the wealthy rather than Mr Average. | |

I wasn't allowing for the boxes as I'm just thinking of the regular fan in the seat but that was the problem, I don't tink he cared how many fans were in the ground just as long as there were enough willing to pay the exorbitant prices to meet the ticket income target for each game.
A similar conversation came up when the whole Oasis ticket debacle started. I think I said at the time if you have a venue holding 60,000 people but ticket demand of 500,000 at the listed price that's 440,000 wasted, as it were.
So, put the price up....demand falls to 350,000..... still too many... put the price up again.... demand falls to 100k.... still too many so nudge it up that little bit more and bingo, 60,000 willing to pay that price.
Sorted!... loadsa money. Zero schits given about who misses out because they can't afford it at those prices.
I guess I was seeing it from a fans perspective rather than a businessman's perspective.
That's how it works these days. Nothing like this is priced on the value of the product, it's all demand-driven and what is the maximum price they can squeeze out of that 'product' regardless of worth/value. [Post edited 24 Mar 12:50]

Tourist fans don't really care I'd imagine if the club they wanted to see were having a blip, probably easier to get a ticket then! It's usually a one-off visit so not the same emotion the regular season-long fan has. I'm sure they wouldn't want the team they are going to see lose but it's all a bit 'meh' if they do. They'll go back home with a zillion selfies and bags full of merch and half-n-half scarves. | | | |

It’s sad but I get it. Should we ever be a Prem club again then my ST at £x per game could easily be sold for £1.5x per game individually plus all the extra spend a more casual supporter/tourist brings.
But, home advantage is a thing and there are enough stats out there to prove that. More points = more revenue. Have these guys ever stopped to consider that? A ST-holder isn’t necessarily contributing to that home advantage any more than someone else but in general I think it’s a fair assumption especially comparing to an actual tourist or neutral rather than a home fan just attending that day. Going to the new Spurs Megadome seems to be easier than the old WHL though there’s a number of factors contributing to that beyond the mix of fans.
Also, tourists don’t want to be sat with other tourists. They want the experience as much as they want to see Player X or Team Y. Just as I do on my occasional forays to a European game. | | | |

As a matter of principle, yes. Indeed it's often been said that the PL could afford to let everyone in for free, and clubs would still have more money than their counterparts in Spain, Germany, Italy etc, from TV rights, sponsorship, corporate, advertising, merchandising etc.
But what's driving the latest round of greedy ticket price increases is the new PSR's (both UEFA and PL), which restrict the amount of money club owners (eg Citeh and Newcastle) can pump into their clubs.
Therefore in order to keep the PL way out in front of the rest, they're now squeezing the fans ever tighter, so that if the "legacy" fans can't or won't pay, they'll just replace them with tourists etc.
That and the fact that half the PL clubs are now owned by Americans, who look at the prices they charge for American sports and wonder why they don't/can't do the same here. | | | |
