I mean, I know we (the English) have always taken the piss, but I’ve just seen their U21s got walloped 1-6 by Iceland U21s.

Any hope for them? I thought things were looking up last summer.

I know he's not responsible for the U-21's, but looking at the NT generally, It may be illustrative to go to the Tartan Army Message Board, where they have a thread entitled "Steve Clarke F**k Off" (no asterisks)

It dates from June 2022 - eek - though it gets regular updates, incl from Monday night.

What would be really funny, is if they failed to qualify for the World Cup, despite the number of teams able to qualify for it increasing to half the planet!

Scotland are so blessed with talent, that one of their centre forwards plays for the runaway league leaders in league one and from 25 league appearances so far this season, has one goal and zero assists....

Can't recall his name though..

Can anyone help ??

They’ve got Denmark and what appears to be an exciting young Greece team in their group so to even get a playoff is a big ask. European nations obviously have plenty of spots but you still have to either have a lucky draw or be fairly good to get there.

I think it’ll get to the point where some nations are given byes and probably use the spare time to play each other in lucrative friendlies. Not much point Brazil and Argentina going through qualifying now the way South American qualification is. In Europe there is at least a bit of jeopardy but it would still take an almighty clanger for England to fail let alone the better European teams.

A mini tournament with Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Mexico in Miami. Germany, France, Italy and England in Timbuktu. It’s the future.

Re your middle paragraph, there is already talk (though no more than that as yet) of UEFA adopting the "Round Robin" format, now used for European Club Competition, to use for NT World Cup qualifying.

South America has used something similar for years, though with six teams qualifying from only 10 full members (and 2 or 3 of those crap), they couldn't have a European-style Group qualifying process even if they wanted.

Anyhow, I can't quite make up my mind on the Jocks qualifying for major finals. Otoh, they invariably stink the place out when they get there. Oto, they do add the unbeatable comedy value of hideously suburnt grown men in skirts, crying into glasses of overpriced foreign pisswater in mosquito-ridden foreign climes!

Genuine question. If Scotland qualified for the 2026 World Cup and first thing they did was send back a letter from Amercia, which would arrive in Scotland first, the letter or the returning team?

Quite like the idea of a tournament pre WC qualifying where the better performing teams dictate how many countries from that continent get to qualify for the next world cup.

Imagine Japan smashing it, and getting 4 Asian teams into the WC, or Brazil shtting the bed and having only 4 South American teams next go round. Talk about putting some extra pressure on the countries taking part and and stoking some animosity between the countries. Would love to see the Scots twist themselves into knots figuring out if they were allowed to want England to win if it gets them a better chance of qualification as a for instance.

They'll never learn will they?
As long as Celtic and Rangers are bumming the life out of their crappy league for eternity, than everything is right in their world.

The growth of the English Premier League did for Scottish football as it has for Irish and Welsh. Their players used to get signed up to English teams frequently until the the mid 90s when youth academies started scouring the world for young talent instead of focusing on home nations.

England could have gone the same way but at least the FA put the investment into home grown talent, which we are seeing the fruits of now.
