Was just reading about him the other day, and sounded like he was getting help and was in a much better place from what he was a year or two earlier when he was so close to death. Makes it all the more sadder. Excellent player of quick bowling and a decent bloke by all accounts.

A sad loss. I remember him fielding at Lords for Hampshire against Surrey in a NatWest final. I was sitting in the Grandstand with the Surrey members. He must have saved 30 runs in the field from his anticipation and athleticism. At the end of the innings we all gave him a standing ovation. He waved back. Top man.

Used to enjoy watching Smith and Lamb piling on the middle order runs for us. Smith was amazing on the off-side from memory - drives and cuts. Sad to hear that he has passed. RIP.

Fond memories of watching Robin Smith smash everything to the boundary wherever possible.

Loved watching cricket on summer holidays on TV as a kid, the one player I remember the most from that era, loved his batting style.

Such sad news.
Mrs Chesh and I had the good fortune to meet him in a Melbourne bar back in 1992.
We were over to watch the Cricket World Cup and had landed earlier that morning.
To minimise the effects of jetlag I decided that a good drink was required. Consequently Mrs Chesh and I were not at our best by the time we saw Robin Smith.
He was out with some local friends but was more than happy to share a lengthy chat and drink with us both.
An evening with a lovely man, that we will never forget.

So sad to hear the news. Happens to way too many sportsmen after they finish what is a relatively short career.

My abiding memory of Robin Smith is of him hooking a bouncer from Curtly Ambrose for six in 1991. Not many cricketers could do that.

Rest in peace.

Suffering since 1978.
