We have a documentary thread, so how about books for Christmas pressies to give to yer brother, who won't read it, forget who gave it to him, and give it back to you by mistake in five years:

'The Escape' by Pippa York and David Walsh - Walsh is involved, so the writing's top class. It's a kind of a journal of the 2020-2022 Tours de France as the two of them share a car for weeks on end, but also a telling of Robert Millar's journey to become Pippa York. I found it educational, mature, light-hearted and - as Mortimer and Whitehouse would say - life-affirming.

"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."
Poll: Player of the Year (so far)

I'll be controversial and sure many will moan here

But Mary Earps book is an excellent read. And if you want a laugh, the Diddly Squat series is hilarious.

Brian, it's a story you're familiar with, but for the benefit of others.

"The Dodger. DJ Carey and the great betrayal."

One man's journey from sporting superstardom to the jail cell, with nothing to look forward to other than life as a social pariah.

It's the story of one of the greatest hurlers of all time, who retired with the world at his feet from a commercial endorsement perspective. Yet he threw it all away and then conned many people out of hundreds of thousands of Euro, pretending he needed the money for non-existent cancer treatment. The real figure extracted from the public will never be known as many victims probably haven't come forward..

For those of you who like your cricket, I'd strongly recommend Tim Wigmore’s Test Cricket: A History.

It’s nicely put together, diligently researched and beautifully written. Did you know that the first test match was between Canada and the USA? But even if you knew that little nugget, you are reminded of the context, and how it makes sense.

He weaves through enough anecdotes, he takes you on a journey. I suppose it’s a bit like going on a posh, well thought through cruise around the world, rather than a cheap one dropping you off at random ports and hoping you have a nice time on the disco deck. It takes you on a journey that feels very natural; when he shifts from Australia to South Africa to India, you don’t think, ‘It’s jumping around all over the place.’ You feel like you have a good captain at the helm.

Seven Deadly Sins - My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong by David Walsh is also a very good read for those interested in such things

Also, I am currently about a third of the way through Inside by Boris Becker. It focuses on his time in prison but very cleverly weaves in historical stuff from his tennis career and personal life. Really enjoying it so far
