Indeed. And some "told you so" fans will be all over him when his stamina drops.

Dunne has played the same amount of games & minutes as Madsen,

Varane maybe two games less,

Dunne, like Chair, like Field has desire & a will to win which means we don't feel sorry for them after playing 20 consecutive games, let alone Barbet playing 100,

Without Madsen, maybe Stephen changes formation & goes with 3 in Midfield which might be the change we need.

As an aside, I thought i was quite funny watching Sargent Slaughter (mid 90's WWF fans will know who this is!!) on the big screen doing the sign language for the players names with a picture of himself next to it. I dont get it! There was players name and number on the screen but no picture. Why the sign language? Surely a deaf person can still see??

Yeh we were laughing at that. Performative nonsense. Unless West Brom have an unusually high proportion of deaf fans who are also completely illiterate.

If anything, Varane playing as he currently is, is more likely to see his value drop or even put off would be buyers .

Hayden or Field should take over for the next two matches. Preferably Hayden as Field can cover at left back if RND needs to be rested.

I doubt any Club bid 5 million pounds for Varane, but the rumour seems to have raised expectations of him. I think he has played pretty well this season and did again yesterday. For me the player who regularly starts but is playing badly at present is Kone. He set up Portsmouth's goal for them on Boxing day, and got climbed all over by Campbell for WBA's first goal yesterday, and has been pretty much invisible as an attacking threat these 2 away games.

If someone had offered £5m for Varane in the summer he'd have been gone.
It will have been one of those offers that starts with a bag of pickled onion Monster Munch and rises to £5m if Martinique qualify for the World Cup.

Dunne and Field also came in for serious criticism earlier in the season, as has Chair at times. It's like rain in February, inevitable but meaningless.

Each entitled to their own view and opinion of course but I thought he was awful yesterday , and Boxing Day .
Not the only one but he is one of a few that are lucky to still be starting matches at the moment . Which again points to a squad that’s not as deep as many have claimed it to be .

I have a bit of sympathy for Varane on that front as the club have thrown him completely under the bus by leaking out to friendly journos that we had rejected £5m+ for him - even with all add-ons and a 2x multiplier during the Chinese whispers it was nowhere near £5m - they’ve built him up as the new great white hope to ‘save’ us with a profitable sale.

Unfortunately when you’ve spent a lot of money paying PR firms to call you ‘the Lionel Messi of football boardrooms’ and the football on the pitch is crap, the lies off the pitch have to become incrementally bigger to keep the plates spinning, and there is a very big and painful meeting of plate and floor coming up in the not too distant future.

I’m on the record on Varanne but it’s undeniable he’s not playing well ATM

On Kone I totally agree.
Apart from monstering the Charlton centre backs I’m not sure I’ve seen a decent 90 minutes from him. He’s missed easy headers in the six yard box, his stats for shots per minute must be shocking (not on target - just shots) and I feel he goes missing for large parts of games.
However I acknowledge he’s the second best striker we have currently and compared to recent clowns who’ve had the shirt he’s head and shoulders above them. I want to see more of him out muscling right backs and driving into the box, more shots from anywhere that stay hit, more aerial duels won and….. maybe a few goals

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

This was different. The effort was in evidence, it was the lack of quality, passing, control, decision making across the entire team, throughout, particularly, the second half.

I was gobsmocked by just how poor the standard of basic footballing standards were. It looked like they were playing under the influence of magic mushrooms. Utterly bizarre.

I beg to differ. I've seen that game scores of times and so have you.

Seriously?

Kone isn't really cutting it for the most part, but Varane can't/won't pass (forwards), is a wayward tackler at best, and is no goal threat. Apart from that, he's a great player.

I'd take any amount of money in Jan. for him. Bloke plays like Jermaine Jenas on sleeping pills.

This. Was afraid to state the same. Like you, I'm not convinced JS is the final arbiter on who actually plays. The non-involvement of Kolli and Smyth adds credence to that whilst the likes of Varane and Saito continue to be selected in spite of poor performances now being the norm from both.

Field should have started in place of Varane and Smyth ahead of Saito. Dembele initially at 10 with Kolli replacing him at a later stage.

Even though he's told us clearly that he is?

Well, so he either chose to leave Smyth and Kolli on the bench yesterday (crap management) or he was told to. I'm inclined to believe the latter. It will be interesting to see what happens with them both in January.

Kolli is the most bizarre. He's 'injured' then back on the bench but the manager prefers to play Sam Field at 10 in a game in which we create nothing? Completely normal, I'm sure.

That is my worry. We'll call it "doing the Schteve" - get some players to play every single minute and wonder why they drop off in the New Year...

This. I said on another thread that the comparisons with the 2018-19 season so far are unerring and uncanny (even the pink kit).

And we really need any/all of those similarities to cease Right Here, Right Now.

Game was made for Smyth last night . To see the 4 subs come on and he wasn’t one of them simply blew my mind . As been said above , odd things occurring at times this season which leave us all scratching our head a bit.
I said in a text conversation with my son before the game that this line up reeks of tossing it off and preparing to go full beans for the 2 home games to follow..

Well ok.
If we win those games then I think I’ll take what happened last night . Just .

But it’s a big ‘if’.
You’d bloody better win them then , Julien.

This is how it seems to me, go all out on the home matches, and toss off the away games. This is a hard sell especially for those that do the hard miles travelling to the away games, but we have looked so powder puff at home for years, that this season we actually look good at home and the crowd are responding and people are turning up. Home attendances and atmosphere seem to mirror this, from what I can tell, actually look forward to home matches again after the dross we have been served at Loftus Road for quite a few seasons. Personally didn't expect much from Portsmouth and West Brom games, was a bit of a bonus we actually didn't get slaughtered in either game and managed a draw at Pompey. On the positive side we are 9 points better off than this time last season and sit in the top 10 in the league.

I’ve seen plenty of lamentable, lame performances that lacked any desire or effort on our part, but this was definitely more about our inability to do anything positive or with quality.

Varane, Saito, Kone couldn’t win a header, win a tackle, pass the ball or beat a man all night. Poku offered next to nothing, although in fairness it was his first start.

Vale typified the performance of the team in general. Every touch was a disaster. Never seen a performance like it IMO. Amateur hour.

I agree with you.

If JS chose to leave those two, who could have turned the game around, on the bench and instead opted to replace the full backs then he must be losing the plot.

I watch the games on QPR+, like you I gather. I see Varane passing the ball forwards to good effect, fairly safe options but not ones I'd always expect from Field but probably from Hayden. I also see him winning balls perhaps 60/40 in the oppositions favour. I also see him going forward and then apparently unable to find a good option in front of him turning back and making the safe pass sideways or backwards rightly or wrongly it's not always apparent on the screen though you hear from the crowd and Sinton, there was probably something on. For me Varane is not at Madsen's level, but a bit like Hayden is a decent support player in the central midfield. I expect he plays more than Hayden because he's more sellable. Field a better option defensively, but not a 10.

'Disaster'
'Never seen a performance like this'.

Exactly the kind of catastrophising, ridiculous hyperbole I'm talking about. Even supporters who've only seen the last two or three seasons have seen far worse. Blackpool 6-1 for instance. Plenty of other choices.

Vale was a disaster. The boy played like his laces were tied together. Control the ball, pass it. Couldn’t manage that. The lad has potential and probably wasn’t expecting to get thrown into the mixer.

And yes, I have seen some shite in my time, supported this lot for 40 + years. Not hyperbole, just lamenting yet another league two standard performance to go with the many others our lot are capable of.

There has been improvement this season, but we are still a long way from a strong, consistent and professional outfit that we once were.

It was a poor performance whichever way you look at it, selection and fatigue probably played a big part in it, but boy, it was a painfully frustrating watch and confirms my belief that we are unlikely to trouble the play offs. No big deal, no expectation we would.

We move on…..no shitting the bed here.
