Gaffer on today's defeat 18:35 - Jan 1 with 3597 viewsbosh67

Amazingly the title predictor thing when I typed in the word Gaffer automatically found... on today's defeat

I think it's safe to say that us fans are pretty p*ssed off this evening but I'm not sure we are as p*ssed off as Stephan is this evening.

Let me stick up for him for a moment. I looked at the side he chose today and thought, yeah, that's the side I would have picked and the changes I would have made. It didn't work and I would have been scratching my head too right now.

Late on in this interview he talk about it being a mentality issue and he's right. The problem is that 'the mentality issue' has been the same f*cking issue for the last 3-4 years and the last 4 managers. Every single one of them seems to inherit a mentality hex issue that dogs the club.

That starting 11 should have won today. So we can have a go at the manager. He picks the teams etc but tonight the players need to have a real look at themselves and get their act together.

This is a squad that blew Leicester away 12 days ago... and then decided to phone in the next 3 performances. We can all blame the manager but the players have to stand up on Sunday and show us that they aren't feeble and have some pride about their work.

Never knowingly right.

He has absolutely hit the nail on the head with the mentality issue. Why it is never addressed is beyond me. Whoever recruits players, should maybe check if the play r has the balls as well as the ability. Like you I saw that line up, and thought we could get something from the game... especially after the way we spunk off away games now. In the realty there are no games "we should win" - we simply aren't good enough to expect it either. We must however do the basics right first...and you have a chance.

I don't think it was all down to the mentality of the players. I don't think he is telling the full story. For me, Norwich were totally comfortable with our two up front all game and thereafter they just had to keep track of our wide players. I would have liked to have seen him change to one up front and three behind during the course of the game and to try to knit some moves together from outside the box. We really didn't play much in the no. 10 area at all today.

Mentality is such a lazy excuse. It’s been used for years at this club. Are we saying all these different players have a mentality issue? He needs to take some responsibility. We’ve been terrible in the last 3 games against 3 very poor sides.

Two shots on target In 100 minutes of football and the second shot we had came In the 99th minute.

We're better than that stat, we were playing at home and you should expect better attacking stat's.

When I watch the Sky goals Norwich always seem to play some decent football which Belies their current league position.

Anyway.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

We are a bottom half team who’s had some decent results but our budget and squad limitations are going to dictate where we end up,it wouldn’t surprise me based on present performances if we end up 17th or 18th.

I don't doubt the mentality thing but...

Our two strikers thing is amazing when it comes off, looks completely stupid and haphazard when it doesn't.

If Chair was fit and we had the formation option of swapping between playing with a true 10 and the two striker set-up teams would fear us a lot more IMO. As it is we have lots of wingers who aren't that dissimilar to each other swapping places.

NB. Norrington-Davies looked HEAVY today. Like a a full christmas roast washed down with bread sauce, then washed down with a bottle of Baileys, and possibly washed down with the dusty unknown spirit at the back of the cabinet Heavy. Despite being rested against West Brom?

Another one who's beaten before he's started. I've debunked the tired and tiring budget/position correlation again and again, with evidence, and still it's trotted out by one or two as a self-defeating cliche.

We didn't lose today because we're short of money.

As for JS, he's starting to look for me like a man with plenty of questions, but lacking the answers. He's said we lack mental strength, intensity, technical/tactical knowhow, but doesn't seem to be able or willing to deal with any of it. He's the coach - so what's he f*cking for?

Managers are not going to publicly give solutions (if they have one) to the problem as that’s going to play into the hands of teams we play over the next few weeks.

I just hope they do have one and it’s sorted out behind closed doors.

Once we conceded the body language looked well off. Collectively and individually they knew they were playing poorly, Every ricochet went there way, we were losing most 50/50s misplacing passes.

We have a lot of players out of form at the moment. I personally thought he took the wrong forward off Burrell looks a shadow of the player he was a few weeks ago. Kone's lay off work was decent today. Getting some level of consistency out of the wingers or even who to pick must be driving him mad. All were poor today. Here's hoping Chair might be back because we need a lift

So why even bother with going through the charade of post-match interviews/pressers at all and asking him semi-intelligent questions?

I'm sure you're right though - saying something honest, clear, and authentic like, I don't know, 'We may have to change it in games sometimes by putting an extra body into midfield and creating a 10 when it's not sticking to our top two - but it was hard to do that today, as we don't have Ilias to call on. It's my job to work it out with the players, though, as we really let our fans down today, and they deserve so much better from all of us. I'll be thinking carefully about our approach to the Wednesday game, and making every moment we have count in our preparation. Without disrespecting them, we really have to be looking them to put to the sword, given their record this season, and, thinking of last time out, we especially need to come up with a cunning plan to deal with Mr Bannan', would surely give all our opponents all kinds of tools to relegate us and make us all feel much worse.

He’s mismanaged Christmas.

Slice it and dice it whichever way you like but you were 3 points off the play offs and on the back of your best performance of the season, with games against 16th, 21st, 23rd and 24th to come and this is what you did with it.

Nail on head with Xmas glitter all over it!

Like that of his players, the manager's performance seems to be seriously on the wane.

He and we need an abolsutely stonking 90 mins performance against Wednesday. Not 45. Or 25. No excuses. They lost 3-0 at Preston today. We should be absolutely burying them.

If I see Bannan being given the freedom of HQ to ping it around (and probably engineer the winner again), JS can take the first Ryanair flight back to France.

I like Kieran Morgan but apart from his last minute goal he’s been a big disappointment this season. Yes I know he’s only 19 but he’s been pretty awful in the last couple of appearances and was just getting minutes again after his disastrous game at Coventry. I’d be surprised, having seen the comments from the manager at 3:00, if Morgan got on the pitch again other than as a last resort. You could sense his absolute disappointment with Morgan and that he almost felt let down by him. JS seemed very deflated. Unusual for JS to name players in his post match interviews.

I actually think Morgan could do with a loan out for the rest of the season to get regular games rather than a few minutes here and there. He’s not going to progress at all if we keep him here.

Exactly right, we are really missing Chair's presence in the no. 10 role. I'm not a fan of two up front, leaves huge gaps in midfield and when we are chasing the game as we were today we go far too long too often.

I'm a sucker for two up front (Stainrod/Flanagan and Allen, Allen and Goddard, Byrne and Bannister - sigh) - just not our two, I'm afraid!

It's turning into one of those seasons isn't it. Sack off the league cup for whatever bizarre reason you can make up. Can't beat the lower placed teams in the league. Just touch the play off places then tumble down to 16th. All we need now is the fa cup sacked off and you've completed your bingo card.
Season over early Jan.
Roll up, roll up early August and we'll do it all again.

Yes if Chair is fit, let him play off either Burrell of Kane, with Smyth starting to his right. Behind them play Madsen in the centre with Field and Hayden/Varane to the left and right of him Flat back four behind that. Gives solidity in midfield and pace/energy and most significantly guile (Chair) up front. Of course none of that matters if they don’t try, but I think Field is worthy of an extended run of a mid-field trio.

I don't think the comparisons with former players are hugely relevant. We are where we are in terms of players and the fact that we have had to recruit our front two from Wycombe and Burton cannot really be changed.

The point I was making is that Norwich had our formation and game plan worked out from the first minute to the last and even when the substitutions came, nothing changed because Poku and Saito came on and did exactly the same as what Demebele and Smyth had done. So Norwich just had to carry on the same, safe in the knowledge that we would have no shots on goal.

What he could have done, at some stage was to get Kone or Burrell off, bring Kolli on as a genuine no. 10 and try 4-2-3-1 and playing through them from 40 yards out. But we just kept plugging away with our predictable 4-4-2 and the same happens on a regular basis when we cannot get a breakthrough.

Yeah that's great. Compare a manager who has been with us half a season, managing in this country for the first time to two of our best ever.

I thought Norwich did a real number on us, they had the game plan and basically took their chances. Once that 1st goal went in it was game up for Rangers, was impressed by Norwich's No.33 at the back was marshalling that defence well. Too much tinkering with the personnel by our manager and we look a bit of a shambles again. I actually thought Hayden was decent today and making a lot of good challenges in midfield, afraid Morgan looked out of touch when he came on and made some poor passes and got caught for their second goal.

Gaffer on today's defeat on 08:50 - Jan 2 with 799 viewsHammersmithR

Stephan has one way of playing. He’s very stubborn and bordering on Warburton and Holloway. The Christmas period has been a disaster. 3 games against Pompey, West Brom and Norwich. All struggling sides and you can count on one hand the number of chances we have created. He’s clearly getting told by Ben Williams and the data boys who is available or not. We have had radio silence on JCS. No other side yesterday made more than 8 changes and we somehow managed to look even worse than the West Brom game. Too many squad players are just not good enough for this level. The constant changing of the keeper and defence is not helping. It’s not rocket science to know any successful side needs a consistent back 5. We change our back 5 every game. We must be the only professional team that rotates its goalkeeper! I couldn’t even tell you who our number 1 is which is farcical. The only player not being rotated is Dunne because I assume he’s the captain and has to play. I have struggled to warm to Stephan all season and the last 3 games haven’t helped. He needs a massive performance against Sheff Wed and to actually take the FA Cup seriously. If I turn up at West Ham next week and he plays a weakened side with kids he needs to go straight to Stratford station to get on the first train to Stanstead and get himself on the next Ryan Air flight back to France.
