Ok, i know it's my fault but really...

Already had 3 points and then in the space of 2 months picked 1 x 24mph in a 20 and 2 x 23mph. All on the same road, a main wide A road that was 40mph not so long ago. So about to lose my licene for 6 months.

Rang the police phone number as instructed, nice guy i spoke to said they literally can't cope with the volume of 12 pointers coming through since 20 mph became a mainstream thing.

Still at least the council can spend it on rainbow pedestrian crossing etc.

Grrrr.

I read a story of a woman in England who got done by a speeding camera, fought it, lost in court and on the way home flicked two v-signs at the camera.
Which snapped her.
She got done for dangerous driving.

20mph is madness on some roads & it’s hard to keep at 20mph, they should sort out the bloody pot holes as roads are disgraceful

It’s not the one coming from Kensington to Earl’s Court is it, westbound ?

Thing snaps constantly.

It’s a complete joke, rainbow crossing or pot hole repair. Have you ever seen a pot hole in a cobbled street…

Similar situation over here. All for safe roads, but this is as motivated by a money grab than speed reduction for if it were not, then the toll roads would be full of speed cams.

The government has increased the fines to be charged and, in some instances, jail time will follow if you're caught doing some heavy duty speeding. Although heralded as measures to stop speeding, I read from a reliable source, that in some instances, speed signs will be removed and people were expected to know the prevailing speed limits based on the roads you are traveling on. A tad cheeky.

Anyway, it's working! 2026 kicked off with a letter from President Macron addressed to me saying, 'Monsieur Planète, Pony up 45 euros sil vous plait. Cordialment. Emmanuel.

What do you do? Shrug the shoulders, pout, then make some noise from the front part of the mouth, before parting with your hard earned.

I once got done in France for driving whilst not smoking.

Never knowingly right.

I got caught in Brentford a few years back and did a zoom course along with about 10 others.
You have to introduce yourself with a bit of info on the course.
I said Colin All Cars, like a drink and support QPR. One of the 10 said “ You Rs “ so I was chuffed. Cost about £100 but no points on licence.

Speeding fines, points, potholes and pedestrian crossings have slowed me down too.
Funny thing is, since I’ve adapted my driving I don’t seem to take any longer getting places.

Related to this was shifting from moaning about traffic, to accepting that I am the traffic - that’s helped my mindset too.

Life’s hard enough without having roads boil my piss.

If you're unable to control the speed of your car to the extent that you would certainly fail a test, I can't really see why you would expect to be able to continue driving.

It doesn’t help, but you have my utmost sympathy, it’s a disgrace that you can lose your licence for driving at a speed below all legal limits under the rules virtually all of us learned and earned our driving licences.

Fair enough around schools but, as ever, they take our understanding as a green light to extend their rules everywhere.

I wish every uber, taxi, chauffeur would tell Khan and his ilk to get out of my vehicle and jog on, literally.

23 in a 20 seems very harsh to me for points - what's the cut-off? 22? 21?

The more of this sort of thing I read on here the more thankful I am I don't even bother trying to drive in London.

I think it's 10% allowance, so 20mph you"re allowed 22mph.

I don't know what it's like in England, but in Ireland there's no speeding around schools because an Irish citizen who has children is required by law to double-park, roll down their windows and talk to their friends for half the morning.

This has successfully eliminated speeding.

On my route to LR, there are roads in West London that vary between 20mph and 30 mph limits, which require a little bit extra concentration as my Satnav hasn't been updated to reflect the changes. Same down in Southampton where the main route into town has been 30mph for some time now, but my Satnav still says it's 40 mph...no defence, of course!

I have a road near me which switches boroughs half way and changes from a 20mph to a 30ph - a residential road which is bizarre.

I'm generally for 20mph as it does seem to save lives even though I find it frustrating myself driving having learnt with much higher limits. I just feel on A and B roads it would generally be better if the limits were 30mph, with exceptions around schools and maybe park entrances etc and speed cameras more targeted around those areas. I've not looked for evidence though on where most accidents occur, maybe they are mainly on main roads in which case my poin wouldn't hold.

I guess in 30 years time, everyone who has passed their test will be used to it, and maybe driving cars that limit the speed automatically (or do the whole driving) so it will be less of an issue.

I live on a main road, and if we don't draw the curtains at night, it can be like having the paparazzi outside with the lights flashing on the camera near us.

Just a counter argument for 20 mph zones.

A fellow Rfosi mate of mine, was pulled over at a police road block near the Med and asked by an officer if he'd been drinking?

My mate replied that he'd had a couple of 'small' glasses of wine with his lunch. The officer rebuked him, and I kid you not, by replying with great theater, 'No! I asked, if you 'had' been drinking. That's not drinking!' and promptly sent my mate on his way.

Virtually all cars these days have limiters/cruise control. Why not just set it to 20 in a 20 zone?

If you can't see or read a road sign, understand what it means and are incapable of complying with instructions, you really should not be anywhere near a car. If you need to know what damage to a person can be done by a car travelling at 20 mph I sure someone will oblige.

In Ireland they have recently introduced 60KM zones for ‘country’ roads. But they haven’t put up 60KM signposts, that would be boring. Instead they have erected speed signs with FIVE diagonal black lines across it - I mean how could you not know it was a 60KM zone - clear as dishwater.

dovetailing a few points from above...... I did a zoom speed awareness course last December, 37 in a 30mph zone that was a road feeding onto a dual-carriageway, so I was speeding up to match the speed of the carriageway, as you're meant to do) and it was demonstrated that you simply do not save any time if you speed, especially in a town/city. If you've left your leaving place late, you're already late. No amount of 'making up time' will work, unless you want extra points on your licence, have an accident etc.

My route into work also crosses the boundaries of a few London Boroughs and it feels like I'm driving like an accordion rather than in a smoother manner due to the constant 40,30,20,30,20,30,20 changes in speed limits. I'm so focused on looking out for what speed limit I'm in to not speed that it's distracting me from focusing on driving. Surely that's not safe?
I could just drive at 20 all the way but being on a motorbike I would get people tailgating me or trying to barge past.

It's not just about speeding too, it's about driving considerately. Unless I'm making this up, I'm sure many years ago on one of the motoring tv shows (Fifth Gear maybe?) they did a test with two professional drivers both leaving Birmingham and taking the same route to a destination in Cornwall.
One driver had to, within the law and all safety aspects etc, get to his destination as quickly as possible using every trick he could (lane changing, driving right on the speed limit etc) and the other driver just to get there in a more relaxed manner.
Over a 3 hour drive, the first driver got there 10 minutes sooner but was mentally knackered and probably at more risk of an accident etc whereas the other driver arrived more calm and relaxed. 10 minutes, that's all it takes to be safe.

At some point though something has to be done about pedestrians & cyclists doing all the things we know they do that they seem to get away with. I understand it's hard to police but the sheer amount of problems they cause has to change. Drive down Pancras Road in-between St Pancras & Kings Cross and see how many people you have to avoid hitting in what is just a few hundred yards.
