Gerrem Onside! - Super League/NRL 2026 thread 21:10 - Feb 12 with 4580 viewsMrSheen

Super League starts tonight in shocking conditions but the 4G spoils the fun, NRL just weeks away. York holding their own for the moment , I used to coach Union with a York fanatic, I hope they can hold their own this season.

York have actually got a fantastic opportunity this year, along with the other promoted clubs, because all you have to do is finish above one of Huddersfield, York, Bradford or Toulouse and you're in with London.

The RFL should just say that now and start marketing all those games as do or die four pointers.

Great finish by York. I know Mikey Lewis isn’t as thick as he looks, but was he doing? I knew nothing about York’s team before tonight, I was amazed to see Ben Jones-Bishop about 16 years after I used to watch him at Harlequins.

I haven’t followed the London story this year, is Lockyear seriously involved? And have you seen Regan Campbell-Gillard in Tooting Sainsbury’s yet? All I know from the NRL podcasts is that everyone thinks he’s a prick.

Liam Harris, Hull FC boy, got in his head, wound him up, drew the reaction.

Fantastic start to the season in a big, crucial year for the sport. Deserves far more attention and coverage.

Yeah hadn't realised it was starting, given all the Sky promos are basically about football and nothing else.

Sky don't give a sht about it. Tonight's game, opening Friday night of the season, is on Sky Sports + so they can show American golf on Main Event.

There's rumours they're not even going to bid for the rights when the deal ends at the end of this season which would be fairly catastrophic for the sport in this country.

Could be a great opportunity for the BBC, or do they have no money for that either? Or Channel Four / Five.

Or it goes to TNT Sports and disappears even further.

Not good.

I was amazed when I looked at the score from York last night.

Three questions for those of you with far better knowledge than me:-

1) Is the Bradford pitch at Odsall(?) still undersize, but allowed by the Super League?

2) My annual question regarding Wakefield Trinity? Is another top six finish a possibility/probability?

3) Do the clubs take the Challenge Cup seriously? I think they do, but I do think that they rest players at times that they wouldn't rest for a Super League fixture.

1 - Yes, it's a joke, absolute sht tip. I think they have got rid of the stock car racing track though, or are planning to.

2 - A probability. Good team, good recruitment.

3 - Yes.

I'd also forgotten about the game they're going to play in Vegas A mate of mine is going for that.

Not really sure what the point is, they really think the US market is there for the taking??

I think it's more trying to get in with the NRL. NRL Europe could be one escape ladder if Sky are going to dump it.

V’Landys would do it, but the clannish owners exasperate him. It’s like the war in Union, should the game be run from the top as a single business or from the bottom as a competition between warring tribes? Of course if the TV companies walk away, they’re on their own again.

Warrington kit, yes or no? Wouldn’t want it for us, but I like it on them. How did they persuade a record crowd out, free beer?

Crikey, I think Steve Cook might run past Jack Welsby as well.

I’m just back from a couple of weeks away with work - good timing! - and been going through this weeks’ NRL games. I’d be prepared to assert that it won’t be the Eels’ year again. Knocked off at half time of the Titans game, and they’ve managed the impossible of getting even worse. Not a great look for the league to have so many walkovers this early.

I would say that the wide margin in the Titans' defeat didn't surprise me but the one suffered by the Eeels did. I expected the Storm to win but not so comprehensively.

Had Penrith not squandered a number of scoring opportunities against the Broncos, that could have been a blow-out score and it would have been merited. Penrith have managed to keep all their top roster players for the first time in about 5 years and the pressure is off them this year too. Players like McLean and Talagi will become better players after last year too.

Interested to see how the Broncos deal with the pressure that Penrith have handled so admirably for the last 5 seasons.

Loving the newly promoted teams in Super League. Toulouse, York and Bradford none of them dying wondering. Ollie Ashall Bott looks some player.

Also, is there more to Tanah Boyd than a pencil-necked weakling destined to end his career in failure at Warrington after all?

He was on fire last night. Off to see the Tigers today. Looking forward to seeing the new winter. Wasn't happy about ticket prices, my goodness.

Wow, Penrith.

I thought that they would beat the Roosters, but not as convincingly as this. Just like the Wahs, they correctly identified the defensive failings on the Roosters' right side.

Penrith have been handed a tough run of games at the start of the season: first six games, at least on paper, but having just conceded two tries in three games would suggest otherwise.

Ropey start from last years minor prems the mighty green machine. Yet could have won it yesterday but for a heroic last ditch tackle from the bulldogs fullback in the last 30 seconds.

Can't understand why we let gun prop Trey mooney go to newcastle while keeping the rapidly declining Josh papall'i. The NRL brutally exposes the ageing process like no other sport on earth.

Once our new young number 7 Ethan sanders clicks with Ethan strange i'm confident of a top 8 finish.

The NRL for me, is the showcase of peak human athletic attainment. It's almost otherwordly.

Go you green machine.

I'm just delighted to have it back in my Thursday and Friday morning routines.
Just the absolute peak of athleticism and performance.

Starting slow and finishing strong might not be a bad idea for Canberra given recent seasons. Christ, sound like Ben Williams there...
