Many, many dogs at the garden centre where I work - there was a young Rhodesian Ridgeback in the other day. Now that is a dog!

Sadly, prone to hip problems at an early age. The few I've 'known' have been on carprofen or the shot too young for my liking.

We lost our Jack Russell (Albert) Years ago, the day he went to sleep forever at the Vets Is a day still sadly fresh In my memory.
I said goodbye to him before leaving for work, patted him on the head as he lay In his basket and to be honest he just about looked back at me.
What an awful dreadful day that was, my youngest lad came and took Albert to the Vets, I just could not do It.
Got home from work that night and the house felt empty, Albert was a character an absolute character and he was Incredibly loyal and he bonded with Mrs Ted.
When we sold the house and moved to Oxfordshire me and the Mrs took Alberts ashes down to the bottom of our village and scattered Alberts ashes into the river Kennet at a quiet spot by the river bank where Albert would stop and take a drink from the river when he was out walking.

We've got plenty of countryside around us for walking but whenever we tentatively mention getting another dog the answer Is always the same, no.

Be ready to go walking, rain or sunshine, I hope you have many-many happy Years together, they wont let you down.

Apologies for waffling on a bit...............

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Rescue terrier Shiba mix so badly abused when we got her nobody could pick her up for years with ribs damaged ets .
14 years here now more than a family member and we know the day is coming when she will have to be sent to doggy heaven ( I am already sick with the thought ).
However as I posted before she will not go alone with strangers .
We have all agreed we will have her euthanized here on her bed with all of us with our hands on her feeling her last breaths she has provided so much joy and security we will return the favour when its time.
Dogs have no hate in their hearts even when abused they are more loving than most humans .

My brother-in-law got a cava-poo in covid times. Similar I think?
Lovely dog, a real family character - great with kids.
Unfortunately they were unlucky as health problems is costing them a bomb - increasing insurance, annual injections, monthly grooming fees etc.
With the family now working less from home, separation anxiety seems a thing with it too (on both sides). My retired father-in-law often driving 40 mins to spend time with it during the day.
It’s a fab dog - full of beans and loved to bits. They wouldn’t get another one though.

On the other hand. We are thankful to be allowed to live in a house with a couple of mildly tolerant but utterly nonchalant cats. 😂

We have a Collie/ Labrador cross. He’s 5 now and still a ball of energy. He gets a three walks a day and is lucky in the fact my missus works from home.
Anybody thinking of getting a dog should remember that they need lots of exercise and investment of time . As Ted said be prepared to go walking rain or shine . He’s got a waterproof coat so it the rain has never bothered him.
Pets are incredibly good for mental and physical health and they will love you to bits.

And thats why we have a cat!

Rescue cat, totally loves us for it. Is in and out all day for food, strokes and just to check we are still there.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

They are allegedly the model and inspiration for Disney’s Pluto…

We have a couple - suitably named as Kray twins. The boss is Mrs Kray and they act as personal Securitas for her.

The larger, younger dog (also has nice hair), prevented a home invasion threat recently. You don't mess with 45 KGs of angry barking, teeth and muscle at the door or window. Silly boys…they were bred as Lion hunters originally, so humans are fair game and the more recent generations have a lot of experience protecting remote properties.

You need a firm hand, a lot of training/bonding and the right housing/garden. Then they are fantastic members of the family. Without that, they are quite a handful and having been bitten by someone else’s, you need to do some serious work with them and understand what they are capable of.

Boston is right about the breeding issues. Torsion can also be an issue - so Securitas can become Dignitas at an earlier age than other breeds.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

I used to be a cat person but was converted to dogs when my ex had a dog Freddie who was just a rough cross breed part jack russell and I loved him dearly (miss him more than the ex) but we've had cats, dogs, rabbits (3 girls that turned out to be 2 girls and a boy and the result was, well you can guess), guinea pigs and rats but nothing now until my middle son arrived back home with his beagle Holly and our cat Cali who went with him when he left to live where he worked. He used to take Holly for long hikes all over the place but his job means I'm in charge quite a lot and only one of us is exhausted after about 5 walks in a day ranging from 20 minutes to an hour or so. My son walks very fast and I walk very slow so she drags me everywhere. She wanders in to the room when she decides it's time to go and puts her head to one side as if to say what are you playing at sitting there at this time. She has lived with cats all her life but thinks that cats outside are something different. She can't be let off the lead - she just wouldn't come back - and can't be left on her own as she howls as if she's been neglected for days but it's great to have her and I think dogs are a joy.

We got an Australian Labradoodle in Feb. Called her Stevie. She's a good girl.
Certainly hard work, but looking forward to her being a bit calmer and not thinking every human needs to be licked to death and said hello to.

Currently she's sleeping at my feet. Love that

Wife hates her, but me and my boys love it!

I 'inherited' a 12 year old miniature schnauzer about six months ago. My mother-in-law has dementia and had started feeding the dog wrong things. This culminated in eggs and bacon which gave her pancreatitis and nearly killed her. We had to take the dog from her which was heartbreaking tbh. With the disease she couldn't grasp why we were doing it and was really nasty to us. We realised it was because of the disease but nevertheless it was a traumatic time.

Fast forward to now and my Mother--in-law is now in a nursing home which she loves. She is like a different person. We are also able to take Jazz to visit her which is great. She parades around the home, showing the other residents her dog. It is lovely to see.

However, although we would never give her away and we love her to bits, it really has reinforced why we never had one of our own! They really are a commitment!
Planning breaks or holidays or even going to work some weeks involves extra planning to make sure she is looked after or not left for long. Luckily I am able to bring her to work if needed (and she has become the 'therapy dog' here!) Add the 7am walks, the 10pm late wees (the dog not me) and I have moved from having a high-maintenance mother-in-law to a high-maintenance dog!

So for me dogs are wonderful loyal pets but a bit of a tie.
