Nicolas Madsen's redemption arc is the big plus point from our round up of midfielders and wingers, which you can read below or listen to the debate on our Patreon here...

In the article you stated ...
"Overall, this year the team had a win percentage of 33.33%, with Varane in the midfield that goes up to 42.86%"

I do wonder if that win percentage is in the first half of the season for Varane, and that his numbers in the second half may be way worse.

Maybe Madsen was carrying him in the first half of the season, but not for the second, as Madsen was injured.

It would be good to know if that's a factor?

Given our record since the turn of the year I suspect everyone’s win percentage will be worse in the second half of the season than the first.

I had Claude run it for me:

Varane with Madsen: 42.9%
Without Madsen: 37.5%

Varane H1: 47.6%
Varane H2: 33.3%

However:

"One caveat on combining the two questions: because Varane and Madsen played together in every first-half game Varane featured in, the "without Madsen" games are entirely a second-half phenomenon. So the with/without comparison and the half-season comparison are partly measuring the same thing — the team was simply worse in the back half, and that's also when the pair were occasionally split. You can't cleanly separate "Madsen effect" from "second-half decline" from this data; they're confounded."

Cheers Clive.

Arguably central midfield is the area that needs strengthening the most.

Whether we have the finances for that, plus new full backs and a goalkeeper, I don't know.

SO far I'm adding the goalkeepers and the defenders together... stirring in the midfield... sticking it in the oven gas mark four and ...... viola! That is one pretty shite squad so far.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

A good listen.

I think one who has gone slightly under the radat that you all enjoyed also.

Harvey Vale.

He could have a real break out season next time.

Looking forward to see where he can get to.

Great pod and write up. Thank you Clive and the team.

So pleased for Paul Smyth one of my favourite players. His work of the ball can go under the radar but not with me and so pleased he is now fulfilling his potential in the final third.

Well done Harvey Vale too who has that touch of class that can win you tight matches. Needs to do more without the ball but as you say a big season coming up for him.

If only we could morph Vale and Smyth into one player now that really would be worth £20M plus.

Finally Clive fantastic to read your piece again on Kieran Morgan's last minute winner. You managed to put in words everything that was so special about that moment. I ended up on the railings at the front of SAR (about to jump on the roof of the boxes below) and had to apologise to my Daughter who was very concerned about my heart rate. This bloody football club eh......

I do worry we will ever see Poku do anything in a QPR shirt, his constant injury woes can't be good for him and ultimately us. Dembele has always looked too lightweight for me and Saito likewise. Paul Smyth has really shown consistency and like the way he goes about things a key member of the team. Vale improving will be great to see him build on last season. Varane not really doing it is he and missing out on the potential sale last summer may be the last of decent money for him. Madsen a great season and onwards and upwards for him. Hoping Chair will get his mojo back as he is a great talent and if he can get going again all good for QPR.

Hoping that if he is still here, Varane can sort his head out and unleash the defensive midfield player that he has very occasionally shown he could be.

The ability to be a success at this level is all there, if he could just put the pieces together.
