Was watching Murder 24/7 on iPlayer last night. I understand why the death penalty was abolished in terms of wrongful convictions. However, there are plenty of people who are 100% guilty (particularly with advances in science and technology) of heinous crimes who really need to be put down like sick animals. There were a couple of cases on there that were truly bestial in their savagery, one of whom ('stabbed' his partner multiple times in the head with a meat cleaver) will be out within a decade. | | | |

Very unlikely that these people will be out within a decade though, given how difficult it is for a lifer to get parole. It is a very rigorous process, involving multiple psychiatric and psychological reports, as well as multiple incredibly detailed probation and prison reports, assessing risk and suitability for release. Most cases have multiple parole hearings before release, with a minimum of 12 months between them, usually more. |  | | |

I haven’t signed the petition, but I do support the concern behind it. I’ve written directly to my MP because I think that has a clearer route to influencing the Government than adding my name to a Change.org petition.

Personally I think that any premeditated act which could reasonably have resulted in death but just by sheer luck hasn’t should be treated in the same way as murder for sentencing purposes. The intention and the recklessness towards someone’s life is still there.
I don’t believe in the death penalty for a number of reasons, not least the miscarriages of justice we’ve had over the years. |  | | |

Most of these petitions are a waste of time but this one now has well over half a million votes. For good or bad, politicians these days are quite easily swayed by public opinion/bad press.
I’d say this could have far more impact than one letter to an MP which will be dealt with by a staff member who’ll write a bland, non committal response. We’ll see. | |

Having done 20 years with The Met you are right it is very hard on morale. And lack of support from our leaders both in the force and government make it even harder. I do not miss it one bit, the environment became toxic and I got tired of being told 'I needed to restore public trust' when I had done nothing wrong.

My own thoughts on it, are that the law was changed as the sentencing in the trial was thought to be inadequate for the manslaughter of an emergency worker when they were on duty. The new law states a life sentence would be the mandatory, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
However, it wasn't retrospective so the original sentences stood in this case.
So even though the sentences were considered lenient, it now seems that two of the three will be eligible for early release next June.
Surely, a contraction to apply further leniency to offenders that were leniently sentenced. | | | |
