Fair enough. I just think most of the hatred towards Thatcher is completely irrational. Some of the things people accuse her of are absolutely ridiculous.

Strangely she seems more hated now than when she was actually in power. I couldn't stand Gordon Brown, but a few years on I couldn't give a toss what he is up to as long as he doesn't come back into government.

I agree that some of the feelings are irrational, but that could be said about a lot of the human experience, of which irrational feelings seem to be part and parcel.

With reads to Gordon Brown, I agree, but the same will be said about most past PM's by at least some of the people. Thatcher however is different, there were no street parties when Heath died, I very much doubt there'll be any when Major of Cameron goes (I not so sure about Blair though), but surely no one is surprised by the reaction to Thatcher's death?

Talking politics. I'm not into any of the major parties at the moment, that's from a person who had always supported the tories. What are peoples views of the green party? Watched their leader the other week and found myself agreeing with a lot of what she said, most surprising.

So we're onto comparisons with Stalin and Hitler now. I wonder what's next.

Ridiculous to compare MT to them.

I'm surprised no one has compared her to Mark Hughes.

14m voted for her in 79
13m in 83
14m in 87

That's a lot of people getting it wrong every time isn't it?

14m again in 92 voted Tory
14m in 97 voted labour
10m in 01 voted labour
9m in 05 voted labour
11m voted Tory in 2010

I didn't ask for figures,I mentioned percentages. Can you then tell how many people voted for the other parties? We might be able to work it out for ourselves then.

Downing Street has confirmed the former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher has been granted a ceremonial funeral, which will take place on Wednesday 17 April.

The funeral ceremony, with full military honours, will be held at London's St Paul's Cathedral, following a procession from Westminster.

I was really upset when I heard the news.

It said she died peacefully.

Thats a shame then. I was really hoping she would have died screaming her head off. You cant win them all,at least shes not breathing any more. All this stuff about not respecting this or that is such bollocks. Why should anyone who has suffered because of her governments (most working class people...especially in the North) respect her in any way. I only wish she had died 30 years ago before and not be able to do her dirty deeds. Since when did respecting a bad person become de riguer?
Tony Blair is not looking too chipper these days,so fingers crossed that that 2nd bottle of Champagne will soon be popping. Cheers to all those right wing toads who are now up in arms about the villification of their heroine. Some of us have been waiting a long time for this and I for one am going to have a week of celebration.

At my age I should not be doing this!

I'm in a similar boat, I'm slightly left leaning (as some of you may have worked out!) and have been a Liberal voter for over 20 years, but I can't see myself ever voting for them again. Not please note just because they've sided with the Tories, but because of their turn around on tuition fees and the way they've formed their alliance.

On tuition fees I know all parties go back on election promises one way or another, but I don't think any party has ever made such a strong pre-election promise, whereby they actually sign pledges not to raise the fees and then triple them as soon as they are in.

The second thing I am disillusioned with is the nature of the alliance. When I voted Liberal I was hoping that they would be a sort of political anchor, resisting or supporting policies of the other parties on a policy by policy basis, with the pros and cons argued out in the Commons and hopefully a consensus view achieved. What we have effectively got is them answering to the party whip whilst assuring us they are effecting things behind the scenes.

I'm sick of this pendulum swing politics, where everything the ruling party does is opposed, irrespective of it's merits, by the opposition.

Please , please don't mention the coal mines, Scargill killed the coal mining industry in UK not Thatcher.

I'm from working class Irish immigrants, she didn't do us any harm at all. I don't agree with the whole working class argument. How did she effect you personally?

I will be cracking open a bottle of champers when Blair kicks the bucket. That war criminal has done so much damage to this country.

It will be funny to hear all the lefties bang on about Blair 'really being a Tory' - laughable. Labour through and through I'm afraid, will do anything to remain in power. Just like the Labour government prior to MT who didn't have the balls to do anything about a mining industry that was losing money hand over fist. Did they reinvest to create other industries and new opportunities - like heck they did, they just did the easy thing and kept the mines open to guarantee their vote, retain power and continue their champagne socialist lifestyles. Just like the last Labour government who have shat on the poor of this country from a great height, giving out more and more hand outs and creating a dependent Britain just to guarantee their vote. They didn't figure that giving money for nothing would cause laziness and complacency and lead to their supporters not even bothering to get off their arses and vote.

Perhaps he, or someone he cared about was on of the extra 1.5 million that became unemployed under her rule?

Mining was dying as was manufacturing. The public sector can't be sustained without a strong private sector. The world was already changing with or without Thatcher.

Completely agree. Regardless of politics, disrespecting someones death in the way that many are trumpeting is such a thick headed and indecent thing to do. I would genuinely have expected better.

It's hypothetical now because its thankfully not going to happen. But its perfectly possible that people who didn't stay silent wouldn't be trying to disrespect her death but rather protest the fact that they're being forced to publicly mourn the death of someone who they feel no respect for. Silence was never an option.

Anyway, this is a very good and very long thread - much better I must say than some of the other Thatcher threads of the past. Maybe her actual death has made us all think a bit more deeply, or maybe Clive's just been hitting delete every few seconds...

I'd say Bosh's post above, and a few of the variations of it earlier sum it up for me:
"It's not about right or wrong, good or evil, it's about your perspective and whether what the Conservative Governments from 1979-1990 did for you and your family and your friends and communities."

Born in '72 and growing up in Norn Iron under Thatcher I'd say people from all sides there could make an argument that the approach to the situation didn't help - the creation of martyrs, fueling the determination of the thugs on both sides, allowing said thugs every opportunity to join the paramilitaries on the pathetic excuse that there no jobs to go to anyway. It was a fcuked time made worse by the policies of the day.

But there are so many other areas of life that she had a deep impact on. Industries were gutted the whole way up the coast. People turfed out on the dole with really no options for retraining and no jobs. It was an all or nothing strategy - they decided there were going to be victims but they'd better get on with it anyway. No middle ground, no apparent careful planning for the impact of all this 'restructuring' - none of it. Thatcher and her cronies just seemed to bury their heads in the sand about the true impact - ideology over humanism.

They closed my dad's plant in 1981 when unemployment was already heading towards 25% in N.I. I won't elaborate on how that all ended but it wasn't good.

So I won't be out anywhere doing jiggs etc, but I did have a few quiet contemplative drinks last night. I'm not sorry she's gone.

You recently accused me of not being a nice person because I felt we should be able to sort out burglars if caught in our house, but you wished an 87 year old woman to die screening in pain.

I think you need to take a long hard look in the mirror.
