Good job you didn't call it Empire Day. When I was young we used to get half a days holiday from school to celebrate.

We gave the native servants a damn good thrashing. This country has gone soft.

We used to have a party where the theme was red, white & blue. Clothes, food, drink etc. All very harmless stuff but living just off Portobello Road the whole notion of Empire Day didn't go down well with the people who weren't born in this country but chose to live here. We had to stop. Of course, having a Carnival (which was wonderful back then, awful now) which celebrated something not indigenous to British culture was perfectly OK to do. (and before anyone scrambles to dig out their racist card to frantically wave around, please look for the big dollop of sarcasm in the above post).

How exciting was it when Queen Victoria visited your school?

Bit ahead of me, moved from Preston Park to Wembley Manor around ‘67. Place is unrecognizable these days, rebuilt in the ‘Brutalist’ tradition and renamed, Wembley Elementary (I think?).
