I've told this story before but in an old job about 15 years ago, I had a meeting with a company that put the big screens into football stadiums.
The bloke turned up and it was Simon Stainrod. I couldn't believe it, a childhood hero.
He was an absolute gent, we raced through the meeting and then had a few pints round the corner while he put up with all my Rangers questions and told all his stories. He was brilliant. Loved his time with us, no doubt
My favourite player when I was little boy, though never saw him play live being too young. I remember being upset and not understanding why he would leave though. Remember pretending to be him when playing football in my Guiness shirt. Can't believe he turned down Barcelona!!
Quality player, a real favourite of mine in a QPR shirt. He just oozed class and his career took off under Terry Venables, was gutted when he was sold to Sheffield Wednesday in 1985. Had a great partnership with Clive Allen.
Such a heartening interview, and balm to my 70/s 80s soul when he talks about the loss of character among modern players, the illusions surrounding the game being faster, more athletic etc. and the culture of rotating modern snowflakes etc. and associated trendy bollocks that takes in even otherwise intelligent posters on this board.
Amazing (and so Stan-like) he had the values to turn down Barcelona - he ended up at Villa and then Stoke after.
Gutted I won't be able to attend his forum, but would be delighted if anyone is attending and can report back on it.
Stainrod was a top, top player. He scored some great goals for us. One of our great No. 10’s. I never know he turned down Barcelona. What a guy.
I remember the chant ‘Simon, Simon Stainrod’.
Would love to have a beer with him.
I loved him - my favourite Rangers player when I was a nipper. Anyone remember the overhead kick v Cardiff? I think we won 2-0, the memories are a bit sketchy.
For me, Stainrod was in that Bermuda Triangle of Frank Worthington, Robin Friday, Andy Ritchie Sphere of flawed Genius.
They all had that quirky Man-who-fell-to-earth DNA in their style of play. All just as likely to shank a 10 yard pass into some old boys Bovril in the stand as they were to caress a twenty yarder into the top left hand corner past some hybrid cyborg of Jimmy Rimmer/Jim Platt/Eric Nixon/GerryPeyton stooge.
They didn't give a flying F uck if it came off or not. Why should they?, They had more talent in their left ball sac than 98 percent of Other footballers. Magic.
Entertainers in extremis.

'Mecca Archer!.. There'll be no more talk of Mecca in this establishment!'
He deserved an England cap on that South American tour in 1984. I was pleased that Clive Allen made his debut on that tour but gutted Stainrod never got on the pitch in those three matches. Three Rs in that party with those two + Terry Fenwick.

when i slung the picture up, I knew you would be the one to remember the story behind it Camberley.
I reckon we could sit in a concrete bunker after a nuclear strike and talk about the'82 world cup until the earth irradiates. ;-)

Venables saying Cardiff couldn’t blame the plastic pitch for that one, because he was in the air when he hit it
