A day to remember 4/3/67 00:08 - Mar 2 with 842 viewsJules4367

It doesn't happen that often but, every once and a while, the 4th of March is a Saturday and my mind rolls back to standing on a stool in Wembly stadium.

The next day, dad bought every newspaper and I cut out and scrap-booked every photo and story. Years later, when we moved, the glue had come through and the pages were all brown and old and the scrapbook was thrown away.

Was the goalkeeper fouled by Hunt...who cares?! we won!! (gosh that's a phrase from the past).

So a nod out, this Saturday, to Peter, Tony, Jim, Mike, Ron, Frank, Mark, Keith, Les, Rodney, Roger, Ian and Alec!

So I was 6 , my sister was 3 and and my brother was a month old ,my mum and dad hadn’t long moved into a house in Northfields. My dad was working for the southern electricity board on popes lane South Ealing. Dad was regularly doing private work at the weekend to try and provide for his new family. Dad came from Maida Hill but we always referred to it as Paddington and was Rangers fan . He used to go all the time and actually saw us play at White City. The story goes that on the 4th of March 1967 he didn’t have a ticket and that morning he was becoming restless and turned my mum and said ‘it’s no good Bren ive got to go’.Anyway he went and a Rangers fan sold him a ticket outside at face value. When we won he says that he was so high on adrenaline he walked al the way the home. Now that’s a story I’ve heard a few times. Dad was born in 1934 and passed 2015 and brother and me along with our nephews and mates have shared countless Rangers memories with him. Tom Downie gone but not forgotten.

Pity the club now disrespects the one and only major competition we have ever won.

It's currently doing a bloody good job of disrespecting another trophy we've won twice, too.

It was a magical day, following on in a magical season. I went to all the home games with my dad and mates. The Leicester City game was dreamland..I watched perched on a crush barrier supported by my dad. I’ll never forget Les Allen’s goal, came down from the underside of the bar, hit Gordon Banks, England’s number 1, on the back and went in!
I did a write up on the final as part of my English work and it helped me get the English prize ahead of classmates Michael Portillo and Clive Anderson. I’ve still got it.
More to the point, what was Ron Hunt doing there in the first place?

Thanks to those who provide pleasant memories of that great day and year in our past.

Unfortunately some fans cannot miss a chance to have a dig at the club. Usually the same dig that they have already made on countless other threads.

The Leicester game was something else - totally surreal, the "no shorts"Mark Lazarus incident included.
Amazing final although I don't think Ron Hunt's challenge on their goalie for the winner would have stood today.
