Glad that your dad was comfortable at the end and it’s lovely that you were there with him. I’m sure he would have been chuffed to bits to know that your daughters had been along to watch Rangers and that you’d been back to LR. I’ve always been massively underwhelmed by Southampton as a city, but we found some good spots on our last visit. There’s a number of decent pubs/places to eat around Carlton Place. I think they all open at 12, but if you get there early, there’s the London Road Brewhouse and a Wetherspoons just around the corner, and both are open at 11am. A couple of minutes away are some more interesting spots: Overdraft is good for craft beers/cider and Mexican food, and Raven & Bine, The Cricketers, The Dirty Barrel, and Bottle and Stoat looked to be decent places for a pint. Piecaramba! is supposed to be a good shout for pie and mash.

A really top bloke and a fantastic player who as well as scoring a ridiculous amount of goals, is probably one of the best English passers of the ball I've ever seen. A brilliant example to kids as a person, a footballer, and of the importance of working hard to make the most of your talent. Chuffed to bits for him. |

Yeah, they should bring back Bert's beautiful ball bag. When they started pulling the balls out of the see-through plastic bowl, that's when the cup's standing began to fall.
Incidentally, if anyone knows how to ask my son's football team to return the footballs to the bag they are stored and transported in, without referring to either a "ballbag" or "ballsack", I would be very grateful. Thank you. |

Lots of talk in football circles that the owners are calling in a favour from Trump and getting him to ring Bert Millichip to pressure him to rescind the 114 guilty charges. Let’s hope Bert tells them to fu ck-off.
Meanwhile, in a tit-for-tat move, I have decided not to build 10 hotels, a deep sea port, and a power station in UAE until they accept the guilty charges. I am also imposing sanctions on UAE, and I have introduced a travel ban, which prohibits any member of the UAE's ruling family from coming round my house. Two can play at this game. |

'Persevere' is Leith's official motto. When Hibs won the cup in 2016, after a 114 year wait, the players all wore t-shirts with the club's badge and the word 'Persevered' across the chest. |

During my adult life, Hibs have been to 5 League cup finals – I’ve seen Hibs beat Dunfermline, just after they fought off Wallace Mercer’s ‘merger’ with Hearts, beat Killie with an amazing 'Sunshine on Leith', and lose to Livi (40,000+ Hibs at the final – probably the biggest anti-climax in my footballing life. Still gutted about that one). They’ve also lost League cup finals to Ross County, and Rangers.
Hibs have also been to 5 Scottish cup finals in that time, ending the 114 year hoodoo with the amazing, last-minute win over Rangers, but then also managed to lose 5-1 to the Jambos, and a loss against St Johnstone after that. It’s quite Hibs to get to a final and then lose against Livi, County, and St Johnstone, but I guess the positive is that it shows that the Scottish cups are sufficiently open that 3 clubs with sub-5,000 home supports can beat Hibs in cup finals. I’ve never taken a Scottish Cup final ticket because with the hoodoo, it just seemed wrong getting a ticket at the expense of someone whose family had spent generations without seeing their club win the bast ard.
It is dull having a league dominated by two clubs, but if it was Fulham, that would certainly be enough cup finals to sustain me, and the Scottish Cup win was like winning the thing ten times over, given how long people had waited. There have been relegations and promotions too, so it’s not been like supporting Everton. The league is never going to happen and having witnessed the devastation experienced by Hearts in 1986 (which many still haven’t recovered from) and 2026, if you’re not going to win the thing, it’s probably best not to take the league to the last day and then finish second.
Anyhow, glad you enjoyed yourself. ER is a tidy ground in a great location, some good places nearby for a pint (The Persevere is my favourite football pub in the area), a good support that can produce a brilliant atmosphere, one of the best anthems in club football, one of the best cup final songs ever recorded (Turnbull’s Tornadoes) a really good derby, and every now and then, they win something and Leith goes mental. There are worst clubs to support. I love Scottish football. [Post edited 29 Sep 15:46]

If the recent Chelsea case was anything to go by, Man City will be fined £500, banned from signing players outside the transfer window, and made to start every season on zero points. That’ll teach the bas tards. Meanwhile, Tinpot Town FC will be docked 40 points for co cking up the registration of an unused substitute in a game in the Isle of Wight Regional Combination League. |

Glad you had a good time. It's a great atmosphere at ER when it's a big game and things are going okay on the itch. Which stand were you in? It's all pretty austere behind the scenes, but Hibs have done a good job with the redevelopment of ER. Biggest football ground in Edinburgh too!
I think you would have got a SoL if Hibs had gone through. Shame to miss that as that is a proper hairs-on-end experience. |
