Three is the cursed number as QPR fall in a hole at Hull - Report
at 08:50 15 Apr 2024

Excellent report! Many thanks.

We really are blessed with two great report writers on this site. The quality is way beyond anything I can read anywhere else.

Can only hope that the confidence of the team was not blown away by the gulf in performance between us and Hull. If they felt it like Alex saw it, there could be a lot of damage done...

Anyone else getting a bit apprehensive?

So, I started this thread before the season had begun and we had some good discussion. What are you felling now and how accurate were your pre-season thoughts and comments?

Gaffer on today's defeat
at 22:25 6 Apr 2024

It is such a limited squad that it is hard to know exactly who or what is to blame for a performance like that.

However, I think we could all see that playing risky balls around the back four before our keeper had to kick it long to an isolated Armstrong was never going to work.

There seemed to be very little pattern of play to our attacking, and we didn't change things up enough even when personnel were swapped. Wednesday could see that Chair was the only threatening option, so double-marked him. He responded by trying to work miracles and other than the Anderson chance, we produced nothing.

Wednesday were there for the taking, but we went about it without enough guile.

I was thinking the very same thing yesterday.

The support has been tremendous and far from the 'fair weather' positivity that many clubs are limited to. I have been pleasantly amazed at how we have got behind the team this season.

When I hear the manager and players thanking the fans in the post-match interviews, you can tell they mean it. Really proud to be an R at the moment!

Lovely tribute to a loyal R. Your dad certainly saw every side of QPR from his first game to his last.

Warm condolences to you and your wider family.

Stan's team mates that were in attendance last night...
at 11:58 9 Mar 2024

When I was a kid I wanted to be Dave Thomas. I played on the wing and rolled my socks down to be just like him. Got really annoyed when teachers started telling me I had to roll them back up to keep my shin pads in place!

On the old qprnet.com I had the username Dave Thomas's socks. My son laughs at me because I often complain about wingers cutting inside so often, but I just yearn for the days of our Dave blasting past full backs and opening up great swathes of the pitch for Stan, Gerry, Don Givens, et al to do their stuff.

I remember being on a caravan holiday in Pagham when I read in the paper that we had sold him. Can remember my heart sinking to the floor.

Was great to see him back on the LR pitch again. So many great memories of that era...

Absolute revelation.

I was sad to see his loss of confidence and form, but was optimistic he would eventually rediscover his centre back mojo.

However, he now looks like a completely different player. He's a big lad and I imagine takes some stopping once he gets in his stride.

Delighted for the lad.

What I like about this guy is that his assists are so deliberate. It's not hit and hope, it's look for the right player and execute the pass effectively. Vision and skill, rather than whack it in the right broad direction. Excellent.

I like the idea of broad consultation with active stakeholders before defining a vision.

The idea of a heroic leader with a startling vision developed in isolation is largely a myth.

He is doing the right thing in taking time to understand the 'customer base' and it's concerns and aspirations. If he is worth his salt, he will be able to distinguish between useful insight, chronic embitterment, and distracting minutiae.

Definitely for the ref. He'd made a few odd decisions in the run-up to half time and it was directed at him imho.

Let's give the guy a chance. He is still, in essence, completing his pre-season training and getting to match fitness.

A little part of me, of our shared experience, and of QPR just passed away.

He scored on my first ever visit to LR. I will never forget him or the pride I had in supporting the club that Stan Bowles played for. Incomparably brilliant. Loved the man...

'Joyous, wayward, wonderful'

What a fitting and insightful set of words they are to summarise Stan.

Not ashamed to say that I shed a tear or two on that day. He looked frail, but suddenly broke into a huge smile and raised his arms aloft as the crowd sang, "Stan-ley".

He really was something from another planet in his day. Worth the ticket price alone to watch him do his thing.

Much love to him and his family at this tough time.

I'll always be grateful to Kevin Gallen. He was walking to LR on a match day and looked across to see my young son (7'ish at the time) desperately trying to summon up the courage to call out to him. He was kind enough to cross the road to say 'hello' and sign an autograph. My son was walking on air afterwards.

He didn't have to do it, it would have been easy to look away and walk on, especially on a match day. Created an unforgettable moment for my lad for whom Kevin Gallen was indeed magic!

Back to the OP, I think our support from the offset is important. There was a lot of moans and groans during the first 15 minutes on Saturday. Lots of impatience with anything other than a forward ball. Not really sure that helped, as it could have pressurised the players into unduly risky passes. (I am as frustrated as anyone with our tendency to play in front of the opposition, but if the pass forward isn't on, it's not on).

I think it was great that the goal was scored when it was, and from that point on the crowd was great. Just need more of that on Sunday...

Your first proper trainers or boots.

My first 'branded' trainers were Adidas Arizona from Kays catalogue! Bought them a size too big so I could wear them for longer. Looked like clown shoes for the first few months! Obviously went for the blue and white version.

No idea what my first boots were, but probably Gola...
