In the third and final part of the Dale vs Scarboro trilogy, Dale finally got the win against their East Yorkshire rivals. It wasn't easy however, as Dale played most of the game with ten men following Paul Sparrow's sending off just before half time.

Dale got the all important victory in a tense match in the concluding part of the Dale-Scarboro trilogy. Barrow had made a couple of changes as a result of Saturday's disappointing display at Chester and as a result of FA rules governing loan players. Carden retained his place, and Williams returned after being rested at the weekend. Diaz and Stuart returned to first team action, whilst Bailey was dropped and Farrell could only manage a place on the bench. Dale were playing a kind of 4-5-1 formation with the two wingers.

Dale started brightly and soon put the visitors under pressure. Dale looked like they were up for the game and wanting to make amends for the previous weeks disaster. It was no surprise when Dale got the lead within the first ten minutes. A cross came over and Mark Monington hit a bullet header which nestled in the back of the net.

After taking the lead, Dale continued to press and Scarboro were looking the side the league table suggests that they are. Both Mark Stuart and Robbie Painter had long range shots parried away by the Scarboro keeper Tony Elliott, after good moves. However, we soon saw the Yorkshire side come back into the game and Dale allowed them to. We witnessed some more of the sitting back which has been at the root of recent problems. Scarboro caused very few problems for Super Neil Edwards.

The turning point came just before half time. A Scarboro attack saw their forward and Dale defender Paul Sparrow tangle arms. The ref blew his whistle, before producing the red card. It seemed very harsh as if Sparrow wasn't the last defender, there would not have even been a yellow card. The challenge certainly seemed 50-50. The resultant free kick proved no problems for Dale, as the half drew to a close.

At half time, out of favour Dave Bayliss was brought on to replace Isidro Diaz who was sacrificed as Dale returned to the four at the back. Dale had further problems five minutes later when Jason Peake hobbled off to be replaced by Gary Jones. Jones played most of the second half with his shinpads in his hands for some strange reason.

Scarboro stepped up their efforts to try and get back into the game. They had a few chances but as is always the case they found themselves frustrated at the hands of Neil Edwards. He tipped a long range shot around the post. He was beaten at one point but the ball rebounded off the inside of the post and went for a corner on the far side.

Dale were quite negative in the second half, but due to the sending off, they didn't have a great deal of choice. Balls were booted up front to Robbie Painter who never stopped running all night. The game was sewn up, when Scarboro keeper Elliott came out to kick the ball away. Bryson made a superb block and the ball fell nicely for him. As the defenders raced back, Bryson went towards the dead ball line. As he approached it, he went goal ward and fired home from close range to an ecstatic Sandy Lane, who celebrated like they had won the cup itself.

It wasn't pretty by a long way. However, the players showed the required effort and must be applauded for keeping it going against 11 men. The win was what was needed. We are in the second round for the first time in two years. Barrow's job is safe for a bit longer.
