Jewell: Town Now More Flexible
Jewell: Town Now More Flexible

Boss Paul Jewell says there’s a greater flexibility about the current Town side, admitting that his team lacked a Plan B earlier in the campaign.

Town’s autumn run of good form — which included a home victory over Saturday’s opponents Brighton — came to an abrupt halt as sides worked out the diamond formation.

Jewell is conscious that opposition managers will be working on finding a solution to the Blues’ current successful system: “I think we’re got to be aware of that and it’s something that we’ve worked on in training, the ability to change our shape during games, whether that’s with the players already on the pitch or with a change of personnel. I think we’ve got to be flexible.

“I think a lot of teams are trying to match us up. Cardiff played with a diamond last week and they changed their system to try to counteract the way we were playing, which is a credit to us.

“We’ve always got to try and be one step ahead of that and try and have a Plan B. When people worked out the diamond, we probably didn’t have that, to be honest. Maybe we’ve got a bit more flexibility about us now.”

The Town manager says lessons should be learnt from previous games whether you win them or lose them: “You have to learn from your mistakes and from what you’ve done well. We take what we’ve learned in one game forward to the next.

“I think if you look at the season and watch every minute of every game, as we have, you would say that for large parts of those games we’ve played quite well.

“But in the periods where we haven’t, we’ve conceded goals — the Southampton, Peterborough, Doncaster games and Reading at home we conceded two or three goals in five or 10-minute spells, which gave us a mountain to climb.

“In the last couple of games we’ve kept two clean sheets and when we’ve come under pressure we’ve managed not to concede. Up until recently, when we’ve come under pressure we’ve conceded one goal, if not two.

“Having said that, we’ve conceded goals when we haven’t been under pressure by just making basic errors. We’ve cut them out in the last couple of games and we’ve seen the benefit of it.”
