All the paper talk is about Saints chasing strikers in the transfer window, but according to a poll in the Daily Echo this area is the least of our worries for the coming season.

In a poll on the Daily Echo website almost half of those that voted felt that defence was the area that most needs attention in the summer, 42 % to be exact with 25% feeling that a central midfielder is the main area of worry, 21% feel that we need to find a new winger, 8% a goalkeeper and only 4% think that a new striker is needed.

In the main I would agree with this poll, certainlty although the defence was strong in the easier games, too many times it capitulated under pressure, especially in the run in and against the higher placed sides, we only won one game against the top tn on the road and in this run of nine games let in 15 goals in the process, the poll seems to give the verdict that the many Saints supporters saw this trait as well and know that it needs addressing, given that the vote asked only for your top priority in the transfer window, its fair to say that some of the other voters were probably also concerend about the defence, but felt that the midfield was a more problem area.

I too have to agree with this assessment, all to often we relaxed and conceded goals. In the centre of the defence Fonte and Hoilvelt were often guilty of lapses. Everyone can't be perfect and the style of our game means the defence has to be up high leaveing us vulnerable to the long ball down the centre. That suggests getting more speed out of the centre midfield of defence. Martin springs to mind here.
My main concern in defence is the backs. Good going forward but a lot of concerns defending, Fox in particular with Richardson coming close behind Then Harding with Butterfield the most mature of them all.
Midfield I think we have a reasonable bunch of players the only question mark, to my mind, would hang over Hammond, mainly because he's the only one who has spent the majority of his career in League 1 he made the step from League 1 to the Championship OK but can he make the grade in the Premiership.
Adkin says he wants to bring in a couple of more players. Who? I agree with his policy, which I call a "Star Team" rather than a "Team of Stars" The existing team won us back to back promotion so they should be given the chance to measure up.
