Saints At Blackpool The Verdict Sunday, 9th Mar 2008 21:30 Saints have strong links with Blackpool through players who have played for both Clubs, however this was our first visit for over 30 years. It wasnt a pleasant afternoon for the travelling contingent at Bloomfield Road, first most of them had watched Pompey play Man Utd on TV then they had to endure the conditions at what has to be the worst League ground in the country at present. In short it only has two stands complete, one end is completely open allowing the wind and rain to blow in off the North Sea and straight into the other open side, laughably with a temporary stand on it for the away supporters. The first half was scrrappy but Saints had dug in against the strong wind and took a deserved lead through another Gregory Vignall penalty, but if Saints fans thought the hard bit had been done and were looking forward to playing with the wind then they were mistaken, at half time the clouds blew over the wind dropped and what had been a great advantage for the home side wasnt there for Saints, but they couldnt blame the weather for the mad ten minute period after the break when they found themselves once again chasing the game. That wasnt helped with the injury to Andrew Davies that is very worrying but at least they didnt leave their fans hanging on for injury time with Stern John equalising with just under a half hour left to play. Saints once again showed character in adversity to not only get back on level terms but keep on them, every game seems to throw up a new injury and problems but they kept battlling with Nigel pearson once again showing he is not afraid to try something different as he did with the double substitution on 73 minutes completely changing the front two. Sadly it was a day when all around Saints seemed to win meaning that Tuesday's game against Leicester is now vital for a win, Saints have the character and they have the spirit they just have to turn the corner and get three points on the board, if they can do that on Tuesday he season will change, if they lose then its going to be a very tough and tense couple of months. The Saints fans deserve a mention they turned up in big numbers to have to endure the elements in an away section that surely contravenes a few health and safety laws in respect of toilet facilities at least, yet they kept backing the team and helped them to a point, if the fans stay behind the team it will make the rest of the season a lot easier.
